I watched this advert with mixed feelings.

It’s easy to hear beginner violinists as “noise.”

As teachers, we hear something different.

We hear courage, concentration, persistence. We hear children doing something difficult that they couldn’t do yesterday.

One day, those “squeaks” become melodies. Those uncertain bows become confident performances. And that transformation is one of the greatest privileges of being a music teacher.

Every beautiful performance begins with someone brave enough to sound imperfect.

I’m a little late posting this, but what fun we had at our last group lesson! A bit of singing, moving to music, and of course lots of playing together. 🎻

As I reflect on this academic year and think about each pupil individually—their perseverance, determination, and just how far they have come—it truly warms my heart. I learn so much from every single one of them.

Choosing what is arguably one of the most demanding instruments, then showing up week after week with patience, discipline, and courage, is no small achievement. None of this would be possible without the loving guidance and encouragement of their home teachers—the parents. 🫶

Thank you to every family for trusting me to teach your children and for being so dedicated to their musical journey. By creating a nurturing and encouraging environment at home, you are helping these young musicians flourish.

As Dr. Shinichi Suzuki said, “Where love is deep, much can be accomplished.” ❤️

And just look at these beautiful handmade cards… creativity extends far beyond violin playing. 🥹 Treasures that I will keep and cherish.

Looking forward to seeing you all again in August. Until then, enjoy every moment of the summer holidays! ☀️🎻

P.S. My little boy joined the group and tried a bow hold… for about 30 seconds. Safe to say he had other plans after that! 😂

🙌 🎶

Music learning can shape far more than musical ability. 🎵🧠

Research continues to show strong links between music participation and academic achievement across core learning areas. But music teachers also know something deeper — well-rounded musicianship is built through both singing and instrumental learning. Instrumentalists benefit from singing, and singers benefit from learning an instrument.

The strongest music learning experiences don’t divide these skills, they connect them.

I think this is becoming one of my favourite ways to teach note reading — getting the children moving, thinking and discovering together rather than only learning from a page 🫶

When an award-winning fiddler, composer and educator moves into your street… you simply have to invite her to one of your group lessons 🎻✨

Anna-Wendy Stevenson shared some beautiful playing and spoke to the children about fiddle music, rhythm, and musical storytelling — and even got everyone joining in with some lovely fiddle tunes.

Very grateful to Anna-Wendy for such a special afternoon, and to all the families for always being so warm and supportive 🫶
