The Acorn School

The Acorn School An independent school which provides an 'education for life' to children and young people aged 6-18.

The school offers its students a well-structured, extensive curriculum with the aim of helping them to realise their full potential and become confident, conscientious, well-rounded individuals ready to step out into the world. The family atmosphere gives a strong sense of community and allows pupils to develop at their own pace in an understanding, nurturing environment, where parents are an impo

rtant part of their children’s education. Academic studies are carefully balanced with subjects encompassing creative, physical and outdoor activities, which create a wholesome, rewarding programme that challenges and motivates students to think, learn and grow. The broad range of subjects is designed to engage and cultivate the intellectual, emotional and physical aspects of every child, and to inspire them to create work that they can be proud of.

On Monday the 1st of December we celebrated the beginning of Advent with our Advent Spiral.

During the Spiral Walk, we celebrate the turning point in the year when the days become their shortest and the night its longest and we look for the light which comes from within. In the center of the spiral, a single candle is lit. Each child walks the spiral alone to the center of the spiral, where they light their own candle to place along the spiral accompanied by piano music. When all the children have walked the path, the whole spiral is aglow with lights.

The experience of the Advent spiral reflects the human experience at this time of the year; finding light in the darkness, entering a time of shorter days and longer nights and going forward with hope.

Nature art at Michaelmas
Classes 8-12 went to the woods as part of their Michaelmas festival yesterday. We collected and arranged pieces of nature in the style of the British artist Andy Goldsworthy. It was impressive how even small adjustments and bringing of form and symmetry can reveal an artistic dimension in the tapestry of field and woodland.
