Wayfarers Outdoors

Wayfarers Outdoors 'Going to the woods is going home.' (John Muir)

Learning and living in nature for all. Bushcraft
Bushcraft is the art of 'thrival' in the wild.

Wayfarers: starting people on the journey of learning and living outside, in nature. All we do is based in our belief that everyone has a right to outdoor experiences, preferably in nature, where they can develop confidence and self-esteem. The leaders are fully qualified for the course they are running, have DBS clearance and full first aid training. Through learning a range of skills including s

helter building, fire making , water and food sourcing and preparation we can provide you with what you need for survival in relative comfort while you find tranquility from being out in nature. We offer bushcraft days: skills courses, corporate team-building, one to ones, bushcraft for schools. We also run foraging and woodland/ natural craft skills courses. Foraging
We offer seasonal courses to get people enjoying wild food and drink. These events include a walk to find a range of edibles followed by a meal giving the opportunity to taste foods made with wild ingredients. Wild Crafts
Have you ever wanted to carve a spoon? Join a Spoon and Stew event and we'll show you how then cook you lunch. What about making cord from plant fibres? This makes a beautiful addition to jewelry or it can be woven into containers. We also run seasonal and occasional craft workshops such as Christmas wreath making and bath bomb making. Forest School
This is a specific ethos – a way of working with children in an outdoor natural space for an extended period of time, ideally a full year. These sessions are tailored to the needs of the individuals within the group with the aim of building participants’ self- esteem, confidence, independence and creativity. We offer forest school sessions of one and a half to two hours for groups of up to fifteen children in which children are given opportunities to engage in learning through nature. You can come to us or we can come to you. Wildcraft and Bushcraft Parties. These can accommodate up to 12 children. Activities include making camps with dens, fire lighting and outdoor cooking. The theme can be tailored to the group. Some may prefer arts and crafts based themes while others will want a survival theme. Wildcraft parties run for two hours; Bushcraft parties run for either two or four hours. Talk to us – we can plan a party with a difference. Where you can find us
We work in three beautiful woodlands in North Somerset; alternatively, we are able to come to other locations if that will be better for you. All we ask that there is a patch of green with grass and trees large enough to offer a sense of freedom. We always apply Leave No Trace wherever we may be. Details of upcoming courses are listed under Events on this page. We look forward to meeting you in the woods.

It's been a Forest School day today: free range children responding to prompts or coming up with their own thing to do.

Hapa zome took an interesting turn. The drought has made the leaves dry so only a few specks of colour transferred to the fabric. Berries, however, were another matter. Rowan berries and blackberries were used.

It was sticky. It smelt wonderful. The results pleased everyone who tried it.

You may have noticed there's a bit of fruit glut at the moment.

Hawthorn berries, blackberries, bullaces, sloes, crab apples, elderberries are all ready for picking now.

An alternative to jams and jellies is fruit leather. Strips of fruit leather are great addition to a packed lunch.

Heat your oven or dehydrator to 60⁰C.

De-pip/seed your chosen fruit and whizz it into a mush in a blender. Add sugar to your taste and heat in a big pan until bubbling well as you would for jam.

Line a baking sheet with baking paper or a silicone mat. Avoid waxed paper as the wax will adhere to the leather.

Spread the mush from your pan evenly on the prepared sheet at about 3mm thick then place in the oven/ dehydrator.

It'll take 6-8 hours to become leathery. Once it has, allow to cool then cut into strips and roll up. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Hammocks: perhaps a bit of a marmite item.

Along with a tarp they're a lightweight camping system which is quick to set up. They bring you closer to nature than a tent yet not so close as using a tarp alone.

Have you spent a night in a hammock?
Did you enjoy it?
