📣 A message for every celebrant and graduate in our community

Right now, the UK Government is consulting on the biggest change to wedding law in almost 200 years, and it includes a proposal that could allow independent celebrants to conduct legally binding weddings for the first time.

This is a genuine opportunity for our profession, but nothing is decided yet. The consultation is open for anyone to respond to, and it closes on 24 September 2026.

Whether you trained with us or elsewhere, whether you're newly qualified or have years of experience, we'd really encourage you to have your say. This is the moment the government is actively asking to hear from people like you, and the more thoughtful, genuine responses they receive, the harder our voice is to overlook.

On boundaries and kindness

Here's something I say to every celebrant I coach who's running themselves ragged:

Setting a boundary is not a failure of compassion.

A celebrant who can say "no" calmly and clearly is often safer to work with than one who says "yes" while quietly becoming overwhelmed.

We came into this work because we care. But kindness without limits isn't sustainable. And it isn't, in the end, kind - not to your clients, and not to yourself.

Hannah's story — the moment she knew she was in the right place

When the bright purple folder arrived in the post, Dr Hannah Coysh opened it and read the very first module title:

Inclusion and Diversity.

"I knew I was in the right place," she told me.

Hannah is a GP, a Macmillan doctor, a Lifestyle Physician, and a coach. She's spent over twenty years sitting with people in their hardest moments.

When her mum died in 2023, a funeral celebrant gave the family something Hannah had never experienced before - a ceremony that felt honest, healing, and full of love.

"It showed me how powerful a thoughtfully held ceremony can be," she said. "And I knew I wanted to offer that same sense of meaning and comfort to others."

She trained with me as a funeral celebrant. She is now doing exactly that.

Inclusive language in ceremonies is not about walking on eggshells. It's about genuine curiosity. It's about asking people what words feel right to them — and then using those words.

Using someone's correct pronouns isn't a political statement. It's basic respect.

Replacing "bride and groom" with "couple" in your opening doesn't reduce the warmth of a ceremony. It opens the door a little wider, so more people can step through it feeling that this space was built for them.

That's what inclusion actually looks like in practice.

Sian's story: from not wanting to be a wedding celebrant to "I cannot wait"

Sian Parry came to celebrant training because of a funeral.

She watched a celebrant she'd never met speak about her aunt as if she had known her all her life. She thought: "I want to help families give loved ones the service they deserve."

She signed up for funeral celebrant training only.

By the time she'd finished, she'd gone on to complete wedding celebrant training too.

"Once I passed the funeral celebrant course," she told me, "I wanted to do the wedding course because Dinah was so motivational."

And the wedding Celebrant training? From someone who originally had no interest in it:

"From someone who did not want to become a wedding celebrant, I now cannot wait to do my first wedding - and to do a handfasting ceremony."

That shift. That's what good training does.

On pricing your worth

Here's what I tell every newly qualified celebrant who asks whether they should charge less because they're just starting out.

Your pricing tells a story. Not just about the service you offer - but about how you view your own value.

Charging what you're worth isn't arrogance. It's sustainability. It's saying: I intend to keep doing this work.

And here's the thing nobody tells you. People will value your work as much as *you* do.

Charge with confidence. You were trained to be remarkable. Act accordingly.
