Sunday 21 June saw the inaugural OL Golf Day take place, with 26 OLs and OLGS members teeing up as guests of an OLGS host at six courses across the UK: Walton Heath, Worplesdon, St Enodoc, Ringway, Luffness and Gleneagles.

This year the cream rose to the top, with James O. Guterman (2008) scoring 37 points off scratch at Ringway. A 69 for 36 points at Luffness by recent leaver Sean Y. Gallacher (2023) was equally commendable, and sufficient for second place.

All who participated had great fun on the day, and this is something both the Society and OLGS hope to build on in future years. Please stay tuned for more information about 2027’s event, and a possible return to Musselburgh Links, The Old Golf Course to celebrate 200 years of Loretto.

NEW CHAIR OF THE LORETTONIAN SOCIETY

We are delighted to announce Andrew J. (Jack) Kelly (1982) as the new Chair of The Lorettonian Society, following Colin B. Davidson's (1983) decision to step down as Chair after a hugely impactful five-year tenure.

Jack was initially recruited to the Executive Committee in 2025 following his retirement from Deloitte, and he steps into the role of Chair with a wealth of OL connections and a strong desire to keep improving OL engagement and relations with Loretto School. We are thrilled to have Jack at the helm of the Society for the school's 200th anniversary celebrations next year and he is, as always, delighted to hear from any OLs who wish to reconnect with the Society.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Colin for his many years of unwavering service and contribution to both the Society and Loretto School. Colin was initially recruited to the Executive Committee as Honorary Treasurer in 2019 following his retirement from Middle Temple, and immediately sought to bring the Society into the 21st century by implementing a brand-new online accounting system and external audit process. After accepting the role of Chair in 2021, he was then instrumental in steering and rebuilding the Society after Covid, and has worked tirelessly to strengthen the Society's relationship with both Loretto School and the Old Lorettonian Golfing Society.

We are delighted to share with the OL community that Keith Chalmers-Watson (1963) has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026, for services to Wild Bird Research and Conservation. This recognition reflects decades of dedication and commitment to the conservation of threatened species.

Keith first became a member of the World Pheasant Association (WPA) in 1975, bringing with him a long-standing passion for aviculture and the conservation of galliform species. He has contributed hugely to the association in the intervening years, most notably serving as Chair from 2013–2021.

We are extremely grateful to John M. D. Simpson (1965) for passing on to the Society a box of Loretto memorabilia, including photographs taken by his late father John S. Simpson (1923) when he was a pupil from 1919–1923.

A selection of these photographs are shown here – including images of the old school gym and swimming pool – with the full collection available to view online in the Society’s digital archive (link in bio).

We’re sure you will agree it’s fascinating to see images of Loretto from more than 100 years ago and, while much has certainly changed during this time, there is strength and familiarity to be found in the fact that some views remain almost exactly the same.

We're delighted to announce that tickets for our Annual Lunch in London are now available to buy online, and already selling very quickly!

This year's lunch is being held at Fortnum and Mason on Friday 30th October and all Old and Honorary Lorettonians are warmly invited to attend. Standard tickets are £100 and tickets for under 30s are £50.

If you're keen to attend, we'd strongly recommend booking sooner rather than later to ensure you don't miss out - as 50% of all tickets have already been snapped up within one week of sale!

It was wonderful to see several OLs return to Loretto last week, to participate in the inaugural Loretto Juniors International Golf tournament. From left to right are just some of those who attended - Ferdinand Glaessgen (2024) Harry Dixon (2025), Lennard Nuetzl (2025) and Julius Heinemann (2025).

Held at Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, the event brought together talented young golfers from across the globe, alongside a strong contingent of players from Loretto's own Golf Academy.

Strong performances from pupils and OLs alike saw Alex (U6) finished second overall in the boys category after the playoffs, just ahead of Julius in third place. In the U18 girls category, Grete (L6) also finished third overall.

Well done to all involved for a fantastic competition!

Loretto Day 2026: 60, 50, 40 and 30 Year Reunions

As part of Loretto Day 2026, it was our great joy to welcome back groups of Leavers from 1966, 1976, 1986 and 1996 for a reunion BBQ.

Gathering under glorious blue skies and sunshine, it was wonderful to welcome around 40 faces for food, drinks and plenty of reminiscing. Special mention must go to Keith Brodie (1966) and David Houston (1966) for their efforts in rounding up an excellent turnout from their year group – and to Keith, in particular, for flying all the way over from Australia!

Many thanks again to all those who attended, and we hope you had a wonderful day!

Loretto Day 2026: OLs vs 1st XI Cricket

Our annual OLs vs pupils Cricket match was one of Loretto Day's many highlights, marked by competitive spirit and friendly camaraderie.

Thanks to a well-earned 62 from Ethan H and an incredible seven-wicket haul for Andrew W, this year's match saw the pupils emerge victorious.
