A few months ago, I decided I needed to do something about my weight, which was spiralling in the wrong direction. I felt unfit, and my blood pressure was constantly high.

I joined Fisherrow Bootcamp, changed my diet and started losing weight, but I felt I needed to do more to improve my fitness, so I decided to add some PT sessions with Alan.

My high blood pressure was a real worry. Even with medication, it just wasn’t coming down. To my surprise, after just four weeks at bootcamp, my blood pressure was back to normal and I’ve actually been able to reduce my medication with my doctor’s guidance.

I’ve now lost an amazing 11.7 kilos! 🎉 I feel so much fitter, have loads more energy, and I genuinely think it’s made a big difference to my mental health too.

Who knew I would actually like bootcamp?! 😂 The people are such a great bunch and everyone is so encouraging and supportive. Thanks to Alan and all who have pushed and encouraged me.

Feeling fitter, healthier and happier — and I’m not stopping here! ❤️💜💪🏃‍♂️

Don’t stop and well done Kay Baillie

I started at Fisherrow Bootcamp in July 2013, not really knowing what I was walking into—only that something in my life needed to change. The first few sessions tested me more than I expected. My body ached, my confidence wavered, and more than once I thought about giving up.

But I didn’t.

Each time I showed up, something shifted. A little more strength, a little more belief. The journey hasn’t been easy by any means—it’s been full of sweat, doubt, and hard lessons—but it’s also been full of growth, laughter, and moments I’m truly proud of.

What made the difference wasn’t just the training. It was the people. Alan, Karen, Velvet, and the whole team saw something in me even when I didn’t see it in myself. They kept pushing, encouraging, and reminding me why I started.

Looking back, joining Fisherrow Bootcamp is the best thing I’ve ever done. It didn’t just change my fitness—it changed my mindset, my resilience, and the way I see myself.

And the journey? It’s still going. Stronger than ever.

Why cutting your calories too much can actually hold you back

I see this all the time at Fisherrow Bootcamp.

People decide they want to lose weight, so they slash their calories as low as possible. The thinking is simple: eat less = lose more.

But it’s not quite that simple.

Yes, you need a calorie deficit to lose body fat. But too big a deficit can make the whole process harder to stick to and harder to perform well with.

When you’re not eating enough, you can end up feeling:

🥱 Constantly tired and lacking energy
🍫 Craving everything in sight
🏋️ Struggling to get the most out of your workouts
💪 Losing muscle as well as fat
😤 Irritable, hungry and fed up
📉 Finding it harder to stay consistent

And that last one is a biggie.

There’s no point eating 800 calories less than you need for a week if you’re absolutely starving, miserable and then end up overeating at the weekend.

The goal isn’t to eat as little as possible.

The goal is to find a calorie deficit that allows you to lose body fat while still having the energy to train, recover and actually enjoy your life.

Think sustainable, not extreme.

Get your protein in. Eat plenty of whole foods. Keep training. Get your steps up. Sleep properly. And give your body enough fuel to do what you’re asking it to do.

Slow and steady might not sound as exciting as a crash diet…

…but it’s a hell of a lot more likely to get you where you want to be.

After trying for years to lose weight and tone up, with little success I decided to join bootcamp. I really needed someone to hold me accountable and keep me motivated when I felt like giving up. Alan has done just that and since joining with my partner in April I have lost 6.3kg and the muscles are starting to show 💪. I was terrified at my first class but I had no reason to be, everyone who attends is so supportive and lovely and its a great little community to be a part of. I feel so much stronger and happier in myself, best decision me and my partner ever made to join ❤️ Emma Duffy

I have been coming to Alan's classes since 2013. Having just moved back after 13 years overseas, I was looking for something different. At school and uni i was a competitive swimmer and played lots of sports, but I had skunnered myself 😱 Fast forward many years, kids and a sedentary lifestyle and I had piled on the weight. I was miserable, with no self-esteem, fat and unfit. I really wanted to get fit, strong, healthy and train with like minded people, so I decided to give bootcamp a try 🙈 I still remember my first class, when Alan shouted "follow me"! Off we went running to Newhails. I thought, WTF I couldn't run the length of myself 🤣🤣. Everyone was so supportive, I was mortified! But I kept going back, slowly I was get better, a floor to sky jump didn't kill me and I started to enjoy a burpee 🤣. Now, over 20kg down, ran my 1st marathon last year at 50, I"ve now ran lots of half's and done some tri's. I love the mix if weights, HIIT and running. Thanks to FBC i've got the confidence to try pretty much anything. These things still scare me, and I have the fear at each class, but I'll give it a bash. For me, I need these classes, they keep me physically and mentally strong, I can then manage the craziness of life. Thanks FBC 💪🦾

Don’t think scale weight only as your progress, think sustainability and get involved with our weight training classes 😎 here’s why …..

Weight training in our classes can help improve insulin sensitivity and increase the number of calories your body uses, both during and after exercise.

* Builds more muscle: Muscle is one of the main places your body stores and uses glucose. More active muscle tissue can help your body use blood sugar more effectively.

* Improves insulin sensitivity: Resistance training helps your muscle cells respond better to insulin, making it easier for glucose to move from your bloodstream into your muscles.

* Uses energy during the workout: Lifting weights requires energy, so you burn calories while training.

* Creates an afterburn effect: Your body continues using energy after a challenging resistance workout as it repairs muscle tissue and restores energy stores. This is known as EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption).

* Supports a higher daily calorie burn: Over time, building and maintaining muscle can contribute to a higher resting energy expenditure, although the increase from muscle itself is generally modest.
* Helps with body composition: Combining resistance training with good nutrition can help preserve or build muscle while reducing body fat.

So, in simple terms: our classes don’t just burn calories while you’re exercising—they train your muscles to become better at using glucose and help your body stay metabolically active afterwards.

Some of you might have noticed I’ve been missing from Bootcamp for a while. At the end of May I had been at a class and noticed my arm felt sore and swollen. I went to A&E and was shocked to find out I had a DVT (blood clot) in my arm. I was started on blood thinners and told not to do any running, weights or other vigorous exercise for 6-8 weeks, and also wasn’t allowed to fly. Those that know me will know I found this extremely hard and I turned to cycling to keep busy. I was given the go ahead to start running and exercise again at the end of July, and my goal now is to complete the New York marathon in November. I also wanted to get back to Bootcamp, but I’m not allowed to do any upper body weights, so I got in touch with Alan to see if he could support me to get back to class. We decided 1-1 PT would probably be the best place to start, so I’m now back doing weekly PT with Alan. There was also a bit of boredom eating going on, so I’m back to using My Fitness Pal and sending my stats in daily. I’ve actually found this really helpful to get me back on track with my diet, and I’m noticing a difference in how I feel already. It’s great to be back and all being well I’ll be off to New York in November for the marathon 🏃‍♀️

If the number on the scales is controlling your mood, your food choices, or how “good” you feel about yourself, it might be time to take a step back, and try a new approach.

Stop focusing on only the ⚖️ . Your progress is so much more than a number. It’s how your clothes feel how your energy levels are it’s the whole picture.

You don’t need to starve yourself, constantly restrict calories aggressively, or cut out the foods you genuinely enjoy to make progress. In fact, approaches that leave you feeling deprived often become difficult to maintain long-term.

Instead, focus on the bigger picture: nourishing your body, eating enough, enjoying a variety of foods, building sustainable habits, getting stronger, having more energy, and feeling confident in what you’re doing.

The scales are just one piece of information they don’t tell you how your clothes fit as i mentioned earlier or how you feel, how your strength is improving, or how sustainable your lifestyle has become.

You shouldn’t have to choose between making progress and enjoying your food.

Maybe the goal isn’t to eat less and weigh less maybe it’s to build a way of eating and living that you can actually enjoy and maintain. If you’ve been stuck in the cycle of restriction and guilt, it may be worth looking at your approach from a completely different perspective.

Trust me doing this job for over 20 years I’ve learned that a one size for all approach does not work.
