I get asked often for advice on choosing a martial art and less often on choosing an exercise option.

Most of the time these are people wanting help choosing between our classes of course but my advice is, I think, universal.

You firstly need to understand your goals and find a school that aligns with them. The same is said for generally choosing a form of exercise.

I say school, not art because you might want to compete as a goal and so saying Karate! MMA! Judo! Is fairly irrelevant. You want to find a school focussed on competition. You might want to learn spectacular kicks, that rules out judo and generally points at Taekwon-Do, Kyokushinkai, Capoeira etc. but if your secondary goal or even primary goal is self defence then you need to pick a school with a good focus on this.

Same for exercise. If you want muscles you need CrossFit, weight training etc. but if you also want cardio add in a second.

For weight loss you need a prolonged, steady burn but you can choose form lots:
Various gym kit
Skipping
Working a bag, steadily
Cycling
Etc

Now. Once you have narrowed this down to a reasonable list try them.

Now here is the clincher.

You will hear many people telling you that you ’must’ do this style as all other styles fail in this area or that.

As a rule of thumb ignore this advice. The people who give it do the thing they are trying to get you into. It has changed their lives, fulfilled their needs and they LOVE doing it.

You might not.

My bottom line is this. Pick something you really like to do, and pick someone with whom you really enjoy doing it with.

The absolute main requirement for SUCCESS is CONSISTENCY. Let’s make up a martial art. We’ll call it Moo Cow Milk.

It is the best martial art in the world, in everything. You try it, you hate it, you stick at it for a few months, you quit.

What good did it do? Not much.

Now ignore the comments saying ‘one day of x is better than a lifetime of y’.

Pick something you love to do, and you will do it often, you will train hard and you will gain.

Hate one, do another.

If you love it you will not persevere you will flourish.

That’s it.

This week at Spirit….

Our introduction to Iaido went well on Sunday, four and a half hours flew by. Lots of people excited to be learning about swords that’s for sure but I bet there were some sore muscles the following day.

Core syllabus work in most classes, preparing for gradings in September with the advanced classes focusing a little on sparring now the weather is cooler.

Looking forward to much busier classes next week after everyone finishes going away on holidays…not jealous at all 😅

See you on the mats!

UFC Hall of Famer and Pancrase legend Bas Rutten is famous for his hilarious instructional videos, but his real-life street fight wisdom is completely unmatched!

Having grown up getting into countless bar brawls in Europe before becoming a world champion, Rutten frequently warns fans about the grim reality of violence outside the ring.

He famously emphasizes that in a real street fight, there are zero rules, no referees, and concrete is the hardest opponent you will ever face.

Using his trademark lethal palm strikes and liver shots, Bas always stresses that the ultimate goal of any physical altercation is simply walking away alive. Absolute legendary street smarts from a true combat pioneer!

Well it was a bit cooler this week!

We had our sparring workshop last Saturday. Students worked on footwork and speed drills.
Keeping a good centre of gravity, and using explosive power to move in/out in point sparring. They looked at good defensive foot movement for effective counter punching in continuous sparring and everyone had a great time.

In classes we concentrated on core syllabus work preparing for gradings in September and advanced students continued to work on drill around explosive and unpredictable self defence scenarios with pressure testing.

We welcomed some new students and we had guests from Hove visit and join us for classes this Saturday!

GCSE results are in and I’ve had feedback from two proud parents, one student with undoubted musical talent for an 8 in music but was no academic slouch as he also got an 8 in maths with excellent grades across the other subjects too.

Our second set of results included three 8s!

Well done, I hope everyone got the results they deserved!

See you all in class 😊

It’s a been a fairly busy week this week at Spirit although classes have been a little quiet with students taking their summer holidays we’ve been stuck into some really cool takedowns and kicking combos in TKD, self defence work and lots of sweaty combos in kickboxing. We have a sparring workshop this Saturday afternoon with Mr Brendan Chadwick and next week we have an introduction to Iaido for something a little different.

The new air cooler and fans we had installed are doing a good job with a pleasant 23c inside compared to 30 plus outside so that was a good decision!

We’ve welcomed some new faces into class and across all three disciplines the students have worked hard despite the heat.

I’ve been looking at next year’s calendar and we have some excellent special guest instructors lined up for seminars, but we’ll announce the names in due course!

A level results are in and one of our students achieved three A* and an A, students/parents let us know how everyone did!

It’s New Years Eve, I’m in the gym.

New Years Resolutions are a great idea but I think a lot of people use them to try to commit to something they feel they SHOULD do, not something they WANT to do.

This year, don’t say you’ll run 10k if you don’t like running, don’t say you’ll hit the gym twice a week if you don’t enjoy lifting, don’t try a martial arts class if you don’t find it interests you and don’t commit to 10000 steps if you hate walking.

I’m in the gym today because it’s a Wednesday and I like it here. Simple.

If you have health and fitness goals then have a think about what you might actually enjoy doing and make that your res for the year, that way maybe you’ll be still doing it December 31st 2026.

And if it’s martial arts, check us out this Jan!
