The RYA has a series of 2-day learn to sail courses specially for adult beginners. These courses are widely available on small dinghies but only a few select training centres offer these beginner courses on small yachts or keelboats. Keelboats are larger and more stable than dinghies & so offer a more comfortable experience to many adult beginners. Bay Sea School is unique on the North West coast as the only RYA training centre teaching these excellent RYA sailing courses on a small yacht on the sea. Please note - RYA Competent Crew is also a beginner level sailing course. It's taught on a larger cruising yacht over 5 days, usually alongside the day skipper practical course. However the syllabus is different to the 2-day RYA Start Sailing & Basic Skills courses. On Competent Crew you'll experience life aboard a larger cruising yacht and learn many things about how to be a useful member of the crew. In contrast, the dinghy or keelboat courses focus entirely on learning the basic techniques of how to sail. At Bay Sea School the beginners keelboat course is split into two modules; Start Sailing, Level 1 & Basic Skills, Level 2. So it takes 4 days of tuition in total to cover the basics of the beginners yacht/keelboat sailing course on the sea. The next keelboat course is Level 3, Better Sailing. This is an improver level course. You can do it as many times as you like to boost your confidence. It's also a useful way to get more practical sailing experience in tidal waters if you don't have your own boat. Inland dinghy sailors use it to learn more about yacht/keelboat sailing on the sea. And it's a great way to get back into sailing again if you're just a bit rusty. Seamanship Skills is a more advanced 2-day course. Shore-based courses include VHF radio, Radar, Diesel, First Aid, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster, Ocean, RYAInteractive: Essential Navigation & Seamanship, Safe & Fun and VHF Radio online. New for 2021 is the launch of Video-conferencing theory courses. First Aid short online updates for RYA instructors are still running due to the COVID 19 restrictions.
