September can feel daunting — especially if last year was hard.

If your child has struggled with anxiety, school refusal or simply hasn’t thrived where they are, it might be time to look at something different. We’re a small, nurturing specialist school for children aged 3–19, and there’s no entrance exam — just a friendly visit and a conversation.

1️⃣ Younger children follow an adapted curriculum rich in creativity and core skills, with a main teacher plus specialist subject teachers.

2️⃣ As they move up, children choose pathways suited to their strengths and aspirations.

3️⃣ Some accrue a wide range of GCSEs over several years; others focus on a smaller number that play to their strengths.

4️⃣ Parents, students and staff shape an individual programme together — with exams taken when each child is ready.

Regulation before reasoning. Safety before success. Belonging before brilliance.

These aren’t slogans — they’re the order things actually happen in. A child who feels unsafe or overwhelmed simply can’t access learning, however bright they are. So we put wellbeing first, every time: calm spaces, trusted adults, predictable routines, and therapeutic support woven through the day. Get that right, and the learning follows.

At Llangattock, wellbeing isn’t a timetabled slot — it’s woven through the whole day.

It’s the morning check-in that catches a wobble early. The nurture space open at break and lunch. The named, trusted adult who’s simply there. ELSA sessions, social skills groups, and therapeutic support like Draw and Talk when a child needs them. Because we know it for certain: safety comes before success, and belonging comes before brilliance.

A calm start changes everything.

There’s no frantic bell, no scramble. A day at Llangattock begins with a gentle welcome and a check-in with a trusted adult — a chance to land, settle, and be noticed before learning begins. From there the day flexes: focused work when children are ready, movement and sensory breaks when they’re needed, and five acres to step out into.

Predictable, unhurried, and built around the child. That’s a day here.

Llangattock School Monmouth is a small, friendly independent specialist school for children aged 3–19 who learn best somewhere different. We welcome families from across Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen, and from just over the border in Herefordshire and the Forest of Dean.

“Why doesn’t my child just behave?” It’s the question that breaks parents’ hearts. Here’s how we think about it 👇

1️⃣ Behaviour is communication. A child who shuts down or melts down is usually overwhelmed, not ‘being difficult’.

2️⃣ Our approach is relational — informed by the work of Dr Dan Hughes and Louise Bomber. Trust comes first.

3️⃣ We respond with curiosity and calm, not sanctions: ‘what happened?’ rather than ‘what’s wrong with you?’

4️⃣ Over time, a child who felt unsafe at school learns that this place is different. And that changes everything.

Hello 👋 If we’ve not met yet — here’s who we are.

Llangattock School Monmouth is a small, friendly independent specialist school in the Monmouthshire countryside, for children aged 3–19 who flourish somewhere different to a typical school. Small classes (around ten to twelve, with a teacher and up to two TAs). Stage-not-age learning built around each child. A calm, trauma-informed setting on five acres of grounds. No uniform, no getting lost in the crowd.

Many of our children arrived having found school difficult. Here, they rebuild confidence — and rediscover a love of learning.

What does “trauma-informed” actually mean? (A plain-English guide for parents) 👇

1️⃣ It means we look at behaviour and ask “what happened to this child?” rather than “what’s wrong with them?”

2️⃣ It means relationships come first. Children learn best from adults they trust and feel safe with.

3️⃣ It means we understand that a child who is anxious or overwhelmed can’t simply “choose” to calm down — regulation comes before reasoning.

4️⃣ In practice: daily emotional check-ins, calm spaces to retreat to, predictable routines, and adults trained to respond with warmth rather than sanctions.

It’s not a soft option — it’s how children who’ve struggled elsewhere begin to thrive.

“Stage, not age” — what does that mean in practice? 👇

1️⃣ Children learn at the level that’s right for them, not the one their birthday says they should be at.

2️⃣ The same child might consolidate a skill with younger learners in one subject while stretching ahead with older pupils in another. Whatever fits.

3️⃣ Specialist teaching in subjects like art, music and science comes to the classroom — minimising stressful transitions.

4️⃣ Exams are taken when a child is ready, building towards qualifications that genuinely reflect their abilities and ambitions.

Learning that bends to the child — not the other way around.
