Wednesday 8th April - Get creative - painting/carpentry/ suncatchers
Thursday 9th April - Easter Egg Smores on the fire

Spring is definitely in the air! We are delighted to be back in the woods all day! Although we are all-weather forest dwellers, I have to say, the weather recently has really improved everyone’s mood. Can’t wait for long days of outdoor learning!

Don’t worry! Every day is book day at Wise Owls! No need to strip down to your bra on Thursday when you’ve forgotten a costume. If your child loves dressing up, wonderful! Bring a costume! But we like keeping it simple and reading BOOKS!! 📚 📘📕📗📚📖📙📓

Well, that’s us back from the in Glasgow and whilst we weren’t the winners of SME Employer of the year, we feel we were very worthy runners up! 🏆

Thank you to Dumfries and Galloway College for nominating us for the award.

I have to say, it was a slightly surreal evening. I’m far more used to standing in my wellies and waterproofs, fishing a small child out of a muddy puddle than standing in a pair of heels!

We’re just a wee home-grown team of 20 people in rural Dumfries and Galloway, and were up against organisations with 200-plus employees across the whole of Scotland— so to even be at the awards tonight feels like a huge win for a small nursery and for our sector.

At Wise Owls, having apprentices isn't just a box-ticking exercise. In the seven years we've been running, apprentices have been an integral part of our nursery.

All of our current Room Leads began their careers with us as apprentices. We’ve supported school leavers, career changers, and someone brave enough to start again at 50.

In a rural community like ours, apprenticeships aren’t just qualifications — they’re opportunity. We get to grow our own talent and strengthen our sector.

Being small isn’t a disadvantage. It means we know every apprentice personally and our apprentices know they can ask any one of us for support in their assignments and we can motivate them to achieve their potential. We love that we get to see them grow in confidence.

So, I feel we are winners anyway and to be finalists celebrates our apprentices — past and present — who bring enthusiasm, fresh thinking and a willingness to step into muddy puddles with us.

Tomorrow I’ll probably be back in my wellies. But tonight, I was incredibly proud of Bea and Brandon representing our little corner of Scotland and to Olivia and Jo too. And not forgetting our Graduate Apprentice in Business Management - Kim - who juggles our rosters (even when we have 5 staff off this week 😬

And lastly, thank you to all our parents who have been understanding of the pressures of staffing this week.

And since we are coming up to Modern Apprenticeship week in March, who can remember when Claire was interviewed as a modern apprentice back in 2023. Claire is now our fledgling room lead, having continued her studies at a Level 4.
