Church House Pre-School

Church House Pre-School A small and friendly pre-school with a focus on the outdoors, where learning about nature is a priority. We are located next to St.

Mary's Parish Church in Mirfield, West Yorkshire and have one of the largest outside spaces in the local area, right on the edge of lots of green space. We have safe enclosed play facilities but much more – our learning has a real emphasis on nature – such as gardening, growing our own flowers and vegetables, and protecting our environment and local wildlife. We are out in all weathers teaching ou

r children to love and respect the wider world. Recent activities include flower growing, litter picking, nurturing and hatching chicks, and building hedgehog highways for the wider community to enjoy. The Pre-School also has a unique close relationship with the award winning Mirfield in Bloom team with our “Little Bloomers” getting involved and engaged in activities to support our town. Church House Pre-School – for children who love the outdoors. A maximum of 25 children may attend the group at any one time. The group is open each weekday during term time from 9.00 am until 3.00 pm, with a Breakfast Club from 8.30 am until 9.00 am Tuesday to Friday. Mornings, afternoon or full day sessions are available from 2 years old. Contact us to join the waiting list or join now.

Next terms Little Bloomers projects 🦔🦇🌼🥦🪾
Although it's a wrap for Church House Pre-School for the Summer, and we've had to say a very fond farewell to some our Little Bloomers as they move onto their next big adventure, we are already planning for next term and will be adding more fun activities as the year progresses.
Luckily we still have some amazing children who are already full of enthusiasm and willing to continue what we've been doing and are eager to try out new things. 🥰

Church House Pre-School Little Bloomers Yorkshire in Bloom entry 2026...

After a few disappointing trials and mishaps, sheer hard work and some very early morning starts, our planting areas for Church House Pre-School Little Bloomers were finally ready for our amazing young children to work their magic on.
Not to be beaten by the recent vandalism I decided to upgrade our Dog Watering Howl to a lovely, calm and natural looking area which will hopefully be to the liking of our passing dogs 🐕 Of course this needed a bit of heavy lifting from She-Ra aka my colleague Lisa Silverwood and my son James so a MASSIVE THANK YOU goes out to them 🤩

It's important to point out that although we enter into the Yorkshire in Bloom competition, and have done so for 9 years, this isn't and never has been the main aim of our environmental activities and community involvement.
Our most important reward is seeing our amazing young children becoming resilient and capable of tackling almost anything offered to them, enjoying what they do, whilst learning and achieving so much when they are given the opportunity.
I think you can clearly see from the concentration on their faces that they are thriving, and that's the most important thing to myself, my team, our parents and the children.

As usual the judging didn’t quite go to plan! 🤔

Although the children know their stuff, one little boy proceeded to relate a very indepth and animated description and life story of the 'local' Scorpion to the very well disguised amusement of the judges, whilst I covertly tried to stop another from rescuing a striken wasp which was on the floor because she "needed to help a poorly bug 😳"

It's always a fast paced and exciting time when the judges arrive - but my absolute highlight of the day, which topped the whole lot came when one of our little ladies peeled a small gold star sticker from her t-shirt and put it on mine, simply saying, "This little star is a big thank you for teaching me to plant stuff and look after bugs!" I think that thoughtful gesture from such a young child says it all and something that I'll certainly remember forever 😍

Another THANK YOU must go out to my deputy Kate Faulkner and her very patient husband Richard, Bill Semple and David from the Birstall Woodturning Club (Mirfield) who very kindly donated an expertly made new steam engine for our Sensory Train, Mirfield in Bloom for their invaluable support and backing, Louise Hardy from the Robertown in Bloom team for kindly donating a replacement water carrier, Jimmy for installing a water butt in preparation for the inevitable hose pipe ban, plus passers-by for giving words of encouragement and endearment as they watched our Little Bloomers having fun whilst learning life skills 😍

And breathe...even if you don't have time to read our 'life story' enjoy the photos everyone 😀

Not to be beaten after the recent vandalism Church House Pre-School Little Bloomers experienced at our 'Dog Watering Howl' - I decided rather than give in to the minority, I would give the area a 'Spruce up' which I hope will be a nice surprise when the children come down and check whether our local dogs have enough water.
I'm sure they will love looking after the plants, and spend some time figuring out what our new "Name the animal' log is...
Watch this space for suggestions - and please enjoy honing your imagination if you just happen to walk passed 🐘🦏🌿

Last week we finally repotted the cucumber plants very kindly donated to us by Teds dad Lance.
As we have been a bit worried about our tiny plant we repotted it into a compostable pot before putting it in the large pot, which we hope will give it a fighting chance. Again, we used the smaller milk bottles which we have recycled and repurposed, so thanks for saving them for us 😃

On Friday we had a surprise visitor…
Emris’ dad Kam brought his brand new pet to meet us all at preschool just before the children went home. His new unusual pet is a Giant African Millipede which will grow much larger and could potentially live for 10 years if Emris cares for him well, which we know he will do under mum and dad’s guidance.

Thanks so much for giving all our children the chance to have a first hand experience of just one of the families unusual pets. This is something they possibly would never have experienced if you hadn’t brought ‘Legolas’ in today 🪱
