West Yorkshire Print Workshop Open-access printmaking, artist studios, adult courses, children's workshops, gallery, crafts and exhibitions
Main site based in Mirfield.

Sister site based on the Piazza in Huddersfield Based in Mirfield, the West Yorkshire Print Workshop is an open access printmaking facility. We also run a regular programme of specialist printmaking courses and other related activities including arts and crafts activities and workshops for young people at our sister site which is based at at the Piazza Centre in Huddersfield. We support artists an

d creative businesses by providing printmaking facilities, affordable studio spaces and exhibiting opportunities for members. WYPW is a registered charity (no. 1147601) and a National Portfolio Organisation of the Arts Council, England. We welcome any offers of voluntary assistance and sponsorship from the private and business sectors.

🎨RISO Zine Workshop with North Or Nowt
Saturday 3rd October 2026 10am – 2pm
Join WYPW member North or Nowt for a creative workshop learning how to use our Risograph, a photocopier and screenprint hybrid, with a focus on creating printed zines and publications.

🎨Intro to: Lino Etching (2 day workshop) with fabian matthias osborne and Jenny Thomas

This introduction to lino etching course will allow you to investigate ways of bringing textural qualities to relief lino printed images.

A History of Printmaking in West Yorkshire
An illustrated talk by BluePRINT project researcher Jas Legg-Jones

West Yorkshire Print Workshop, Mirfield

BluePRINT is a WYPW heritage project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, exploring the history of printmaking across West Yorkshire. Over the course of the project, researcher Jas Legg-Jones has been delving into archives, collections and local stories to uncover the people, places and processes that have shaped the region’s printmaking heritage.

For this talk, Jas will share some of the fascinating discoveries from that research, bringing together stories of printmakers, communities, inventions, exhibitions and art spaces to explore how print has been made, circulated and experienced across West Yorkshire.
There’ll be plenty of time for questions and discussion too.
The talk forms part of our wider Heritage Open Days programme across Friday and Saturday, with creative activities, a rolling screening of the BluePRINT film and archive material on display throughout the weekend.

Multi Process: Drypoint and Monoprint with Cath Brooke

Join guest tutor and print-maker Cath Brooke on this full day workshop, exploring multiple process printmaking with monoprint techniques combined with drypoint.

During the morning we will introduce you to the technique of drypoint, an ‘intaglio’ printmaking process, where a sharp tool is used to scratch marks into the surface of a Perspex plate, and a print is taken from ink which is held within these marks. 

During the afternoon you will be able to explore combining your drypoint with monoprint techniques adding different textures and layers of colour to your prints.

Our taster sessions offer an introduction to some of the key printmaking techniques offered and practiced here at WYPW, and a glimpse into the processes involved in creating hand-made prints. You will be guided and encouraged by experienced artists who use printmaking in their own art practice, in a professionally equipped workshop setting.

Itinerary :
The morning will be plate preparation; working from sketches or images provided. Learners will then be guided through the process of plate making, inking and printing in the traditional intaglio way. We will use plastic plates to scratch simple drypoints, before exploring different inking methods to create 2 or 3 variations of the same print. Participants will be introduced to a range of mark making tools, will learn about printmaking papers suitable for drypoint, and learn about the different inks and inking methods available.

During the afternoon learners will add layers and textures of colour to their drypoints, exploring how inking and wiping methods can produce a broad range of images from one drypoint image. This could be a simple one colour background or more detailed building up of layers.

What to bring :
Some inspiration to get the creative juices flowing would be useful – this might be sketchbook work, photographs or reference images from books or online. You’ll be developing / drawing an image to work with that is around A5 in size.

Join WYPW for our annual celebration of the Heritage Open Day Festival on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September 2026. 10.30-2pm on Friday and 10.30-3pm on Saturday.

Discover the hidden stories behind Yorkshire’s printmaking history through the people, tools and traditions that helped shape the region’s industrial and creative past. This event has been developed from research and oral histories gathered through our BluePRINT project, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. BluePRINT explores the history and legacies of printmaking in the region.

From the phrases we still use to the tools that once powered the trade, explore how the everyday world of the print workshop continues to influence our lives today. Meet former compositors, hear their lived experiences, enjoy live demonstrations, browse archive material and have a go at hands-on printing throughout the day.

This is a relaxed, drop-in event and can be explored at your own pace, with a mixture of seated and standing activities.

Join BluePRINT project researcher, Jas Legg-Jones, for a fascinating talk about the history of printmaking in West Yorkshire.
Drawing on discoveries from the BluePRINT project, Jas will explore the people, places and inventions behind the region’s printmaking story, bringing to life the printmakers, communities and conversations that have helped shape its development. We are delighted to announce that Anupa Gardner has been voted the People’s Choice Award winner for Flourish 2025.

Congratulations to Anupa and thank you to everyone who took the time to visit the exhibition and cast their vote.
Following successful exhibitions at Northern Print and Leicester Print Workshop, the Flourish 2025 tour has now come to a close. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with partner print workshops to share the exhibition with audiences across the country.

Thank you to all of the artists, tour partners and visitors who made Flourish 2025 such a rewarding show.

We are already looking ahead to the next Flourish - watch this space for future announcements.

In recent weeks, David and Peter have been working under the alias ‘The Sinister Printers of Mirfield’ to undertake a poster commission for a local theatre company, The Red Shed Players. Keep an eye out for their new historical production, Radical Roots, which is due to tour the north this autumn! 

If you'd like to find out more about the heritage craft of letterpress, come along to our Heritage Open Days on 11 & 12 September. You'll be able to see the presses in action, learn about the history of printmaking in West Yorkshire, and find out how you can get involved.

A few images and video clips from the second day of Stephen Fowler’s ‘Stamping Stories: Rubber Printing and Artist Books’ 2 day workshop. Attendees spent the weekend carving stamps, creating books and exploring playful storytelling. They also had the opportunity to access Stephen’s collections of vintage rubber stamps from around the world!

Stephen will be back at West Yorkshire Print Workshop in October to teach his Neoprene Foam Relief Print workshop – check out our website for more details!
