Another week behind the scenes at GCS Tutoring ✨

This week we’ve been outlining GCSE Science writing in progress, mapping tasks to the specification and building practical task boosts for students.

Good revision should feel structured and manageable - and that is exactly what I’m building.

You do not need to know all the GCSE Science content to help your child succeed.

You can make a big difference by helping them build routines, asking questions about what they studied and encouraging effort, not just results.

Support, structure and encouragement go a long way.

Question: Explain why plants need magnesium ions.

This kind of post helps students move from a vague answer to one that is specific enough for exam marks.

A strong answer should mention that magnesium ions are needed to make chlorophyll, which is needed for photosynthesis.

Exam tip: show your working. Even if the final answer is wrong, method marks can still help students pick up valuable marks in GCSE Science.

Showing your steps also makes it easier to spot mistakes and learn from them.

Use Numbers When Describing Graphs
Don’t just write “it goes up.”
When describing a graph, students should use data from the graph to support their answer. That means quoting numbers, values, changes or trends clearly.
A stronger answer sounds like:
“The temperature increased from 20°C to 60°C.”
Specific data makes answers stronger.

Exam questions can feel scary when confidence is low.
Many students avoid them because they are worried about getting things wrong. The best way to build confidence is to start small, mark the answers and learn from mistakes.
Mistakes are not failure - they show what to practise next.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is confusing describe with explain.

🔬 Describe = say what happens.
💡 Explain = give a reason why it happens.
