Training Session: Ellie Collar, a SEND and development specialist delivering an "Identifying Early Warning Signs of SEND" course on the 18th November at our Training Centre.
Parents and keyworkers often have questions about how to tell when they are concerned for a child; how can they be sure if this is a typical stage of development or if there is a need there that could be supported? A key responsibility in the Code of Practice for Early Years SENDCos is ensuring that their setting identifies when young children may have additional needs, and supporting their keyworkers to carry out quality initial assessments.
How do you best find out about a young child’s development? You go and play with them!
This course looks at fun practical games and play situations that practitioners can create with their children to observe and understand in more depth where their developmental stages might be in:
- underlying play skills
- speech and language skills
- sensory and motor skills
- social and emotional skills
and through play and observation be able to identify next steps to give the right support.

If you enjoyed listening to ‘Room on the Broom’, maybe you can go on a magical adventure of your own? Scurry around the garden or hunt around your house to find treasures to add to your stick.
Can you create your own magical spell?
Which ingredients would you add?
Can you think of words that rhyme?
Maybe you could have a go at making your own story? Gather a selection of items and see if you can create a story from what you find.
We would love to see your creations in the comments below.

For those of you who enjoyed this morning's nursery rhyme - I'm going to build a house, you may like to have a go at building a house of your own.
You may choose to use building blocks, tin cans, sticks or stones...
What can you find for the roof or windows?
Once you have built your house, I wonder who is going to live inside?
Maybe you can tell someone a story about your building and who you chose to live inside.
Here is an activity sheet with some ideas of what you may choose to use to build a house.
Happy Building!

If you watched our nursery rhyme video this morning, you may like to make your own monkey or crocodile sock puppet!
Find an old clean sock, any size is fine. Then take a walk around your house or garden to hunt for different things to add to your puppet.
Maybe you can find some buttons for eyes or wool for hair or a moustache!
I wonder what else you can find for other features?
Attached are some instructions on making your own sock puppet.
Have fun making and playing with your sock puppet!
We would love to see your puppets in the comments below.

What can you find in your garden? Or, if you are staying inside, what can you find in your house? Take a walk around, collect lots of different resources and make a collage of what you found...
You can create a 2D collage on paper/card, a 3D collage using clay/playdough, or you could use an old photo frame to make a collage to display in your house!
Attached are some instructions on making a natural collage using only natural resources, but this activity really can be done with anything!
If you do not have any clay or playdough, then this is really easy to make at home, just following these instructions:

It is another lovely day outside, so again why don't you get out in to your gardens, or go for a local walk for your daily exercise if you do not have a garden (remember to practice social distancing by staying 2m away from others and stay only with members of your household), and make a magic wand! You could even make a wand for everybody in the family so that you can join the wizarding world. Attached is our instruction card on what to do.

Acorn are please to announce the launch of our Childminders Training and Networking Hub.
The next session is focused around understanding the characteristics of effective learning, quality of teaching, observation and assessment. This will be on Tuesday 26th November at our training centre in Westcroft, Milton Keynes.
Unfortunately, Childminders can feel isolated, with little or no support at times when they need it most. Figures reveal more and more childminders are sadly leaving the profession, and we want to try and provide the support and guidance you need to help keep your passion alive.
We have been working with MK Focus to arrange the following focus sessions. We are hoping the sessions will be valuable to your CPD in addition to providing you with opportunities to connect with other childminders.
Becky is an Early Years Consultant and Trainer who achieved outstanding in two consecutive Ofsted Inspections in her former childminding profession. Becky will be leading the training and networking sessions, and welcomes any questions and/or suggestions.
