My daughter came home from school talking about children wanting to lose weight before prom. At 12 years old. đ
It really reminded me how early children absorb messages about food, bodies, and âgoodâ or âbadâ eating. Not because anyone is intentionally doing harm â but because diet culture is everywhere.
Thatâs one reason we try not to talk about weight or dieting at home. Instead, we focus on helping our children trust their bodies, enjoy all foods without guilt, and learn to regulate their own appetite over time.
Words matter.
This isnât about blame. It just made me think about how much children absorb from the conversations happening around them đ€

A modern approach to managing fussy eating - follow for tips
đ Serving food âfamily styleâ means everyone helps themselves to what they want at mealtimes â with no pressure, no negotiating, and no âjust one biteâ battles.
đ€© And the best part? You donât need fancy tableware or a picture-perfect setup to do it.
đ It might seem like giving children that much control would make fussiness worse, but over time it often does the opposite. When children can explore food at their own pace â not ours â they tend to feel more relaxed, more confident, and more willing to try new things.
Less pressure, more exposure.
đ§ What meals do your children love serving themselves family style?
Fussy eater?
This this easy snack box idea to expand food variety with no pressure. Do you do this? If so, what do you add?
Name one thing your child does do at mealtimes, rather than focusing on the things they donât do.
Iâll start. My child doesnât eat mash, but he does eat other types of potato! My child doesnât like sauce mixed in with his pasta, but heâs happy to prepare it.
Fussy eating can feel so personal - especially when youâre doing your best. This small mindset shift can help reduce stress and stop you stepping in too early at mealtimes.

Breakfast can feel like groundhog day, right? Cereal⊠toast⊠yoghurt⊠repeat. So when I spotted this egg, bacon and sausage McMuffin idea from .mama I leapt I tell you!
đ„ Set everything out âFamily Styleâ. Pop the muffins, fillings, and toppings in the middle of the table and let everyone build their own.
đ€ No pressure, no fuss â just choice. Kids get to pick what they want (maybe just bread today, maybe bacon tomorrow) and over time theyâll start feeling braver about trying new bits.
This way, everyone eats happily and mornings feel a bit more fun.
