A modern approach to managing fussy eating - follow for tips

20/05/2026

My daughter came home from school talking about children wanting to lose weight before prom. At 12 years old. 😭

It really reminded me how early children absorb messages about food, bodies, and “good” or “bad” eating. Not because anyone is intentionally doing harm — but because diet culture is everywhere.

That’s one reason we try not to talk about weight or dieting at home. Instead, we focus on helping our children trust their bodies, enjoy all foods without guilt, and learn to regulate their own appetite over time.

Words matter.

This isn’t about blame. It just made me think about how much children absorb from the conversations happening around them đŸ€

😊 Serving food ‘family style’ means everyone helps themselves to what they want at mealtimes — with no pressure, no negotiating, and no “just one bite” battles.

đŸ€© And the best part? You don’t need fancy tableware or a picture-perfect setup to do it.

😭 It might seem like giving children that much control would make fussiness worse, but over time it often does the opposite. When children can explore food at their own pace — not ours — they tend to feel more relaxed, more confident, and more willing to try new things.

Less pressure, more exposure.

🧐 What meals do your children love serving themselves family style?

Fussy eater?
This this easy snack box idea to expand food variety with no pressure. Do you do this? If so, what do you add?

Name one thing your child does do at mealtimes, rather than focusing on the things they don’t do.
I’ll start. My child doesn’t eat mash, but he does eat other types of potato! My child doesn’t like sauce mixed in with his pasta, but he’s happy to prepare it.

Fussy eating can feel so personal - especially when you’re doing your best. This small mindset shift can help reduce stress and stop you stepping in too early at mealtimes.

Serving meals ‘Family Style’ is a great way to build independence and let your child choose for themselves.
Slowly slowly, if they don’t feel pressure to try, they may start to reach for new food.

Is there a meal you serve ‘family style’ in your home?

Breakfast can feel like groundhog day, right? Cereal
 toast
 yoghurt
repeat. So when I spotted this egg, bacon and sausage McMuffin idea from .mama I leapt I tell you!

đŸ„„ Set everything out ‘Family Style’. Pop the muffins, fillings, and toppings in the middle of the table and let everyone build their own.

đŸ€  No pressure, no fuss — just choice. Kids get to pick what they want (maybe just bread today, maybe bacon tomorrow) and over time they’ll start feeling braver about trying new bits.

This way, everyone eats happily and mornings feel a bit more fun.

👉 What’s your favourite breakfast that goes down well with your kids? I’d love to hear your ideas — let’s make mornings easier together.
