In 1939, graduate student George Dantzig arrived late to a statistics class taught by the renowned mathematician Jerzy Neyman at the University of California, Berkeley.

Seeing two problems written on the board, he assumed they were ordinary homework assignments and copied them down without realizing they were actually famous unsolved problems in statistics.

Dantzig later found the questions unusually difficult and took several days to work through them.

Because he believed they were homework, he approached them with the mindset that solutions must exist. Eventually, he completed both and handed them in.

Weeks later, Neyman appeared at Dantzig's home excitedly, explaining that the problems were not homework at all.

They were open mathematical challenges that had remained unsolved by experts. Dantzig's solutions were later verified and published.

The story became one of the most famous examples of how expectations can influence performance.

Because Dantzig didn't know the problems were considered impossible, he never treated them as impossible. He simply worked on them until he found answers.
