One of the biggest mistakes people make when thinking about a career in fitness is assuming everyone else has something they don't.

More confidence.

More knowledge.

More experience.

More certainty.

But if you swipe through this carousel, you'll notice something...

The view is exactly the same.

The opportunity is the same.

The qualification is the same.

The only thing that's different is where somebody happens to be on their journey.

The coach with 5 years of experience once had their first client.

The coach who can write programmes in their sleep once stared at a blank page wondering where to start.

The coach who looks confident today once questioned whether they belonged in the industry at all.

And here's the bit most people miss...

They didn't start because they felt ready.

They started before they felt ready.

Confidence isn't the entry requirement.

It's the result of taking action.

Of learning.

Of making mistakes.

Of showing up again tomorrow.

So stop comparing your Day 1 to someone else's Day 1000.

Because the people you're comparing yourself to aren't seeing a different view.

They're simply a little further down the same path.

And one day, someone will be looking at you and thinking you're the confident one.

One of the things I love most about Maisie's story is that she never planned for any of this.

She originally completed her Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification to help out at the gym her partnership was opening.

The plan wasn't to leave her day job.

The plan wasn't to build a new career.

It was simply going to be something she did alongside her existing work.

But then the doors opened.

Members joined.

Relationships formed.

And before long, that small step turned into something much bigger.

Today, they're supporting over 100 members, many of whom have neurodiversity, mental health challenges, or additional support needs.

What started as "helping out a little" became something she genuinely loved.

So much so that she's now left her day job, returned to complete her Level 3 Personal Training qualification, and is ready to help even more people.

And that's what I love about the fitness industry.

Most people don't start with a perfectly mapped-out plan.

They start with curiosity.

A passion for helping.

A desire to make a difference.

Then one client becomes ten.

One opportunity becomes another.

And before they know it, they've built something they never imagined possible.

Because fitness careers are rarely just about exercise.

They're about people.

They're about community.

They're about helping someone believe in themselves a little bit more than they did yesterday.

And when you do that consistently, the impact becomes far bigger than you ever expected.

Give Maisie a well-deserved high five 🖐️ and a like to celebrate the next chapter of her journey

One thing I've noticed after years of teaching fitness professionals...

The best coaches are always students.

Not because they don't know enough.

Not because they're constantly chasing certificates.

But because they're curious.

They ask questions.

They challenge their own thinking.

They look for better ways to help the people in front of them.

And that's where the magic happens.

Because every time you learn something new, it doesn't just impact you.

It impacts every client you coach. Every class you teach. Every conversation you have on a gym floor.

The ripple effect is huge.

Your Level 2 or Level 3 qualification might have got you started, but it was never supposed to be the finish line.

The fitness industry evolves.

Your clients evolve.

And great coaches evolve too.

Whether it's learning a new coaching skill, working with a different population, becoming a specialist, or simply refreshing knowledge you haven't used for a while...

There is always another layer to explore.

That's one of the things I love most about this industry.

There is always more to learn, and always another person you'll be able to help because of it.

This is something you only really realise once you spend enough time coaching clients on a gym floor.

What feels simple to us as coaches… often isn’t simple to a new client.

Changing a weight stack.

Adjusting a seat.

Setting up a machine.

Choosing the right handle.

To us, it’s automatic.

To them, it’s unfamiliar.

And if that part goes wrong at the start of a set… the rest of the session is already affected.

This is why coaching isn’t just programming exercise selection.

It’s education in real time.

It’s being present enough to notice when a client is unsure… even if they don’t say it.

Because most people won’t ask.

They’ll guess.

They’ll copy.

Or they’ll avoid it altogether.

Good coaching removes that uncertainty early.

So the session becomes what it should be:
movement, learning, confidence, progression.

Not confusion.

Before adding an exercise to a programme, ask this...

What adaptation am I trying to create?

It's a simple question, but it instantly makes exercise selection easier.

Too many coaches build programmes by collecting exercises.

Saved posts.
Screenshots.
Instagram folders full of ideas.

Then when it comes to writing a programme, everything feels overwhelming because there are hundreds of possible exercises to choose from.

They end up choosing "new" or "hard" exercises that take longer to teach, are confusing for the client and aren't necessarily the BEST exercise.

..

The best coaches don't start with exercises.

They start with the outcome.

Do they want strength?

Hypertrophy?

Balance?

Coordination?

Movement competency?

Confidence?

Once you know the adaptation you're chasing, the exercise often becomes obvious.

So next time you're scrolling social media and see an exercise you'd like to use, don't ask:

"Is this a good new exercise?"

Ask:

"What adaptation is this designed to create?"

That one question will improve your programming more than finding a list of "new" exercises.

Not sure which one's my favourite 😂

It's been a busy week inside Parallel Coaching, and one thing we've heard a lot from PTs and coaches recently is this:

"I'm fed up with social media."

Fed up with seeing the same content.

Fed up with trying to think of what to post.

Fed up with feeling like every piece of content has to be perfectly planned, produced, and polished.

And honestly?

We had an absolute blast making this carousel.

We were crying with laughter in the gym putting some of these together (especially "my little pony") 😅

Which is a good reminder that content doesn't always have to be serious.

It doesn't have to be overcomplicated.

And it definitely shouldn't be something you dread creating.

Sometimes the best content comes from enjoying yourself, showing a bit of personality, and bringing your clients along for the ride.

So pick one of these selfie ideas, give it a go with a client, and let us know which one you choose 👀

And if this week has been a bit full-on, here's your reminder to find more reasons to laugh, smile, and enjoy what you do.

Business is important.

But so is having fun along the way
