🏡 Did you know Ashbourne’s Dagenham nursery once operated as a residential child welfare home?

After the First World War, the Becontree Estate was developed as part of the “Homes Fit for Heroes” movement, bringing families from overcrowded inner London to new homes surrounded by open space.

By the 1960s, approaches to childcare had also changed. Tudor House was designed to feel more like a family home than an institution, with children sharing meals, helping with household tasks and enjoying the garden together.

This is a fascinating snapshot of how ideas about childhood, care and community were changing in post-war Britain - and a reminder of how Ashbourne carries this history through to how it continues to operate today. 🍃
