Hello from International Play Iceland and we are in the same place as last year - we were swamped with people wanting to sign up - and we now have about 5 or 6 places still left.

Helga and Disa did a newsletter and it is so indicative of the Icelandic approach, I am putting it out there on my page as well.

There are so many benefits of the Play Iceland Event - its a chance to get immersed with some influential and creative people, to meet others who are as keen to learn as we all are... But most importantly you get to see a society that cares in action and be with all of the Icelandic Early Years people.

Most importantly you can meet and see the way in which children learn of their own volition.

My ‘specialism’ for many years was working with Cerebral Palsy babies - helping parents NOT to accept “they won’t walk, they won’t talk and will have to go to a Special School” and to endeavour to allow/get them to do just the opposite - with some success.

My last one, 9 years ago, was a young lad called Joey, he is now walking a bit, talking a lot and just moving up to secondary school having lived through primary.

I did a fundraiser for a £22k chair he needs for school and raised £1500! I then got this from his mum:

“Hi Tom hope your (sic) doing well??? 😊 things have gone bad to worse here ... Joeys broken his manual wheelchair and also outgrown it so we are faced with another £5700 for a new manual wheelchair with the postural support he needs. Could you kindly reshare the fundraising page you very thoughtfully created as we would appreciate any support towards any of the 2 pieces of equipment. Thanks for all your support.”

Petition: Exempt all early years settings in England from business rates According to the National Day Nurseries Association, the average nursery paid business rates of over £21k a year from April 2023, but costs can be higher. Even charitable settings only receive an 80% relief. We want all early years settings in England to be exempt from business rates.

Joey is a great friend I have known from his birth almost.

He was a typical Cerebral Palsy child who was written off by lots. But a number, led by his parents, believed Joey had the potential for cheeky beautifulness. And he has. Now off to secondary school.

Then I received this:

“Hi Tom how are you?! How's the treatment etc going??? I just wondered if you knew of any non means tested charities that could help us fund Joeys powerchair for secondary school - it's a very expensive item which we've been unsuccessful in getting funding for through the NHS as they won't fund chairs for outdoor and school use!!!! Crazy!!! It's £22,000!!!! I didn't know if you were aware of any charities that support access to education etc x”

I nearly wrote them a note moaning that the Government could find billions for overpriced unusable PPE from their mates but can’t afford £22k to allow Joey to maintain a level playing field in his education.
