In this week’s Junior Design School session, our students stepped into the role of fashion researchers and designers.

We began by watching and analysing a runway show from Milan Fashion Week, taking notes on the details that caught their attention. As a class, we discussed everything from colour, proportion, pleats and layering to the juxtaposition between “messy” and “classy” that the students identified within the collection.

They then used that research to develop their own interpretations of our reveal-panel skirt, exploring different placements, silhouettes and design details before presenting their ideas to the group.

Each student approached the brief differently, and it was wonderful to see their individual ideas emerge as they experimented, shared their thoughts and explained the decisions behind their designs.

This is what Junior Design School is all about: learning to observe, question and develop an individual point of view, not simply copying what already exists.

Pattern Week is officially complete ✂️

This week, our beginners were introduced to the language of commercial patterns, from understanding symbols and markings to tracing their own pattern pieces ready for construction.

There was plenty to take in, lots of brilliant questions and a real curiosity to understand more.

Next week, the patterns move from paper to fabric as everyone begins cutting and constructing their first top.

There’s something so special about watching young minds create.

Our first Junior Design School session was filled with sketching, making, conversation, laughter and lots of ideas, exactly what a creative space for young people should feel like.

I kept thinking throughout the evening, child me would have absolutely loved this. A space to explore fashion, learn real design skills, meet other young creatives and simply be encouraged to make.

That’s what I hope JDS becomes for these young designers, somewhere their ideas are taken seriously, their creativity is nurtured and they’re encouraged to see just how far their imagination could take them.

Bringing a little London fashion-school energy to Milton Keynes, and hopefully inspiring the next generation of designers right here in MK. ✏️🧵

September is nearly here ✂️

Our Wednesday and Friday Beginners Sewing Courses are now fully booked, with just a few places remaining for Saturday afternoons.

There are also a limited number of places available across our Junior Design School groups, beginning Monday 7th September.

I’ll be switching off from social media for two weeks to celebrate both of my children’s birthdays and enjoy some uninterrupted family time during the summer holidays 🤍

Bookings will remain open through the website while I’m away, and I’ll respond to messages when I return.
