After completing his Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation, Alex Goode joined Landview Surveyors, a small/medium-sized firm providing condition surveys and valuations nationwide.

Alex kindly shared with us his experience of a day in the life of a surveyor, from pre-inspection to feeding back to homebuyers – a fantastic insight if you’re thinking about joining this rewarding profession.

“For the inspection itself, I usually start with an external inspection and follow a methodical order, such as moving through chimney stacks, roof coverings, rainwater goods, main walls, and windows. While outside, I’ll also cover the grounds, outbuildings, and garage. I will be taking photos as I go for each section to upload as evidence for my report."

“On a personal level, this role has given me the opportunity to spend more time with my family, which is the biggest plus for me. The work–life balance is excellent, and I even have my weekends back – more time on the golf course!”

One of the biggest worries felt by our surveying learners is finding a role in the field once qualified, but if the results of our latest careers survey are anything to go by, the opportunities are out there – and the sooner you put the feelers out and make those all important industry connections, the better.

📈 Of graduates who responded to the survey, 99% are now working in the field, with 91% practising within the first three months of qualifying and 21% having secured a surveying role during their studies.

What does a career in residential surveying really look like after qualifying?

Each year, we ask our residential surveying graduates about their careers, salaries, employment, the work they're doing and their experience of training with the Sava School of Surveying. We do this so we can stay connected with the profession, understand how our graduates are contributing to it, and provide valuable insight for anyone considering a career in the field.

The results from this year's Graduate Careers Survey are in. Here are the highlights:

➡️ Average starting salary of £41,000, rising to £61,000 after just two years
➡️ 96% joined RICS after graduating
➡️ 81% are carrying out RICS Level 2 Home Surveys, with 54% also undertaking Level 3 Surveys
🌟 98% said they'd recommend the Sava surveying diploma to others

This month, we welcomed our latest cohort to the Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation! Our Kent course got underway with a virtual induction where learners met for the first time, got to know the team and kickstarted their journey into the world of residential surveying.

This cohort includes individuals with backgrounds in policing painting and decorating, construction, carpentry, estate agency and more all looking to begin a new chapter in their careers.
