For Chad Smith and Stewart Copeland, drummers like Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Tony Williams and Elvin Jones helped shape the way they heard music.
Listening to Ginger here, it’s amazing how relevant his words still are. He’s not talking about speed or chops—he’s talking about serving the music.
“One beat in the right place can sound better than 25.”
That’s a lesson every drummer, no matter the generation, can learn from.

A little drum thought for the week 🥁
I’ve just been watching some of Ash Soan’s recent Drumeo “Kick, Snare, Hat” material, which is all about building grooves from the absolute core of the kit — kick, snare and hi-hat — and getting those straight and swung feels really working properly. He also gets into things like adding ghost notes tastefully and building grooves that actually feel good, not just look clever. 
Ash was one of my teachers, and one of the reasons I respect his playing so much is that what he teaches is exactly what I try to pass on to my own students every week.
A lot of it comes back to the same foundations I was taught by Bob Armstrong as well — bury the bass drum, make your snare and hi-hat hits consistent, lock in, and use your ears.
That stuff might not sound flashy, but it’s the difference between just playing drums… and actually sounding solid on the kit.
It’s easy to chase fills, speed and “clever” ideas, but groove is usually built on much simpler things done properly.
That’s what I’m always trying to get across in lessons. Build the foundations properly, and everything else becomes easier later on.

Love this 🥁
This is Liam with his first little home kit around 7 years ago, compared with his first proper acoustic kit, which he got for his birthday a few months ago.
Liam has been a long-time student of mine, and it’s been great to watch his progress build over the years. Lately especially, he’s come on in leaps and bounds.
It’s a good reminder that consistency really does pay off. Keep showing up, keep practising, keep building — and over time it all adds up.

Doug started drumming later in life and always had that goal in the back of his mind of one day properly playing drums and getting involved in a band. He’s recently gone and done exactly that, which is brilliant to see.
This is a clip of him in the studio playing along to a Buddy Guy track. There are a couple of little mistakes in there, but that’s all part of learning, performing and improving. The main thing is he’s doing it — and doing something he’s wanted to do for a long time.
Proper respect to him for sticking with it. Proof that it’s never too late to start

🥁 Big milestone today!
One of my younger students, Vlad, has just got his first drum kit at home.
This is always a really exciting moment because once students have a kit to practice on between lessons, things tend to progress much faster. Even 10–15 minutes a day makes a huge difference.
Vlad has been working really hard in his drum lessons here in Milton Keynes, and it’s great to see the enthusiasm building.
Looking forward to seeing how his playing develops now he’s got his own kit to practice on.

A little drum thought for the week 🥁
One thing I see a lot with new drummers is the focus straight away on speed, fills and flashy stuff.
But the truth is, the drummers that really stand out are usually the ones with great timing and control.
If your timing is solid, everything else becomes easier — playing with music feels natural, grooves sit where they should, and fills land properly instead of sounding rushed.
Most of the lessons in the studio are actually built around those foundations first. It might not always be the most glamorous part of drumming, but it’s what makes everything else work later on.
Some of the best drummers in the world can make a simple groove sound incredible.
That’s usually not because they’re playing more…
…it’s because they’re playing it better.

A little insight from this week’s drum lessons 🥁
One thing I see a lot (especially with beginners) is this idea that confidence should come before starting something new.
In reality, it’s usually the opposite. Confidence grows after trying something, sticking with it, and slowly getting better at it.
The first lesson can feel new, unfamiliar, and a bit challenging — and that’s completely normal. But that process of learning, making mistakes, and improving is exactly what builds confidence over time.
Drumming is brilliant for this. Coordination, focus, listening, rhythm… but most importantly, resilience.
The students who make the biggest progress aren’t always the “naturals” — they’re the ones who show up consistently and keep going.
