Today I had my first lesson with a very young reader. Instead of reading the basic books that she had brought from school, we started reading one of mine. And then we took four of the words in the book (flower, seat, ball and book) and I drew them and she matched the words to the pictures. Then she wrote out the words herself.

Bring fun back to reading and writing! Learning in school can be reduced to a dull "phonics program", but by reading fun books and exploring words, she enjoyed learning letters.

She's never spelt the colours before. She sounded them out and worked out how to spell them, and then she was able to work out anagrams like "knip" and "nereg"! She had a great time!

What do I do at Gift of Learning?
It's a good question! I set up Gift of Learning to help learners. But that's a big description, so I'll break it down.

As a teacher, I want the best resources. I'm always on the lookout for good ideas, whether in books, or on the web. Once I've found a useful piece of work, I save it so I don't have to hunt again! I have resources for Maths and English, 11+, and adult learners. So that makes me a librarian.

I meet potential students, welcoming and reassuring them. Many feel apprehensive, nervous, unsure. It's easy to lose confidence when faced with a new beginning. School, and life, can reduce security. I aim to rebuild that self-esteem and certainty. Some of my students have been coming to Gift of Learning since I started in 2021. That makes me a mentor, too.

When someone contacts Gift of Learning, I ask all about the learner. Each student is different, and deserves their own study plan, which they help me create. That way, both the pupils and their parents have an understanding of the learning journey they will have with us.

Guide, assistant, teacher, librarian, mentor. That's my job!
