After visiting both buildings at Milngavie Primary School this afternoon to see first-hand the many concerns raised by the Milngavie Primary School Parent Council and worried parents, it is clear to me that the temporary repairs which have taken place are not a long term solution and that the school is in dire need of a much fuller refurbishment, including essential and urgent roof renovations. I have been assured today by senior Council officers that there is no safety risk to children, as this was a major concern from parents.

Having the Chief Executive and Leader of the East Dunbartonshire Council present during the school inspection, I raised a question in relation to budgetary concerns: Are funds in place to do the necessary works? I was told that the full report will be going to the Council at the end of the year for decisions to be made.

I also raised concerns that the Parent Council should be updated and was informed that a similar meeting and walk about has been proposed.

And finally, I requested that East Dunbartonshire Council keep me updated on the ongoing work and plans so I can provide an update to worried parents in Milngavie.

Over the last few months, many constituents have been in touch with me about the poor condition of Milngavie Primary School. I will continue to call for a full refurbishment of the school, as was proposed by East Dunbartonshire Council in 2021.

A section of ceiling fell in a P7 classroom at Milngavie Primary yesterday, narrowly missing a teacher.

Luckily, no pupils were in the classroom at the time.

East Dunbartonshire Council says the school is safe. However, this incident, photos taken last night at the school and the photos we’ve posted here and provided to the media (which are timestamped and taken in April and August 2024) show the issues.

Classrooms still leak during heavy rainfall, temporary repairs are failing and there are cracks and holes in classrooms and ceilings across the school.

How can the council say the school is safe when incidents like yesterday’s are happening?

The council needs to take action now to repair and protect the school before someone is hurt.

Susan Murray for Mid Dunbartonshire in your campaign for UK government you pledged to support plans to refurb Milngavie Primary.

East Dunbartonshire Council has now postponed the planned refurbishment of the school indefinitely.

There is mould and damp in the school, mushrooms growing in the toilets, paint peeling off the walls, buckets in classrooms to catch water, a crack in the entrance foyer floor and leaks in the roof.

Children have had to move seats in classrooms to avoid getting wet from drips in the ceilings and some have stopped wearing shorts because they have burnt their legs on radiators.

Will you support our campaign to repair the school now?
