Little Laura's Nursery

Little Laura's Nursery Little Laura's is a quaint nursery just outside Midhurst. We love the outdoors & getting messy is w Little Laura's is in the old West Lavington Primary School.

We believe children need to be children in these first few years of their lives. We spend our day giving the children every opportunity to be independent whilst learning in a secure & fun environment. The children flourish with us being just like a big family!

“While our society often focuses on academic and physical milestones, research consistently shows that it is our earliest relationships, experiences and environments which lay the foundations for our future health and happiness”

I love this quote from Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, shared on her Instagram account . It beautifully highlights the importance of investing in our early years settings, recognising that the experiences, care and learning children receive in these formative years lay the foundations for their future.

By valuing and supporting early years education, we are investing not only in our children but in the future of our communities and society as a whole.

Once again, nurseries are under scrutiny from the Government, with suggestions that settings are not delivering “free childcare” because parents are having to pay additional charges.

What isn’t being discussed is what it actually takes to run a quality nursery: maintaining a highly qualified team, investing in training, providing nutritious meals, supporting children with additional needs, and ensuring every child receives the care and education they deserve.

We understand families are struggling, but what about the professionals caring for and educating their children every day? Childcare is a vocation, but to attract and retain skilled staff, we need to be able to offer fair pay, career progression, and recognition for the incredible work they do.

Why are nurseries continually portrayed as the problem, instead of addressing the reality of rising costs and years of underfunding?

Without nurseries, many families wouldn’t have the option for both parents to work. Instead of criticising the sector, spend a week in a nursery and see the skill, dedication, and impact of early years professionals firsthand.

The issue isn’t nurseries. The issue is a system that continues to undervalue them.

Here I am last night, whilst my children enjoyed a four-hour scoot for a birthday treat, sitting in luxury working on the forecast for the coming year — all the behind-the-scenes bits that no one sees.

Wow, what a way to end the week with the weather looking perfect for the Bank Holiday weekend ☀️

We’ve had a fantastic week at nursery and celebrated three of our teachers’ birthdays, including our wonderful chef, Paola 🎉

Paola has so much passion when it comes to cooking, and the love she puts into preparing food for the children is incredible. Every day I feel grateful that she applied for our position over two years ago.

Did you know that 78% of children aged 18 months–3 years are not meeting their recommended fibre intake? That rises to 96% for 11–18 year olds.

Whilst I’m currently battling with my own children over “just making normal food” 😂 they don’t mind me cooking from scratch, they just wish I wouldn’t add chia seeds, flax seeds or nuts to absolutely everything! I’m trying to teach them the importance of fibre in their diet and that enjoying treats and food outside the home is all part of balance when healthy habits are built at home. I suspect this will become more of a challenge as they get older (although everyone tells me one day they’ll appreciate it!).

Luckily, I don’t have that battle with the children at nursery. They don’t mind chia seeds added to fish cakes, lentils blended into lasagne or sunflower seeds in raspberry pudding. Paola adds fibre into meals wherever she can, and her enthusiasm spreads throughout the children and the team too.

Not a day goes by without some kind of baking taking place! This week we started with our ice cream playdough station, which then progressed into making biscuits and smoothies.

Healthy eating shouldn’t be celebrated for just one week. Every day is an opportunity to show children joy and passion around cooking because, without that, how will we help them reach those fibre goals that are so important for healthy little guts? 💚

Mental Health Awareness Week always feels like a good time to reflect and open up conversations 💚

This week I read a message asking: As leaders, what are we doing to look after ourselves and make sure we’re supported too? It immediately made me think about the children at nursery and my own children at home.

We’re so much more aware now of the importance of helping children understand emotions, creating moments of calm and talking openly about wellbeing. I speak a lot with my children about emotions, sleep, movement and looking after ourselves.

But one thing I’ve learnt through the years of raising babies who are now almost tween-agers is that when your own cup is full, it’s much harder to role model self-care.

Life naturally ebbs and flows — there are good moments and challenging ones. That’s why I always encourage my team to celebrate the little wins: getting out of bed and coming to work, helping a child settle, or finding something small to be grateful for.

Looking after yourself doesn’t need to be another pressure or another thing to achieve.

Sometimes it’s simply:
✨ Going outside for 5 minutes
✨ Calling a friend
✨ Going to bed a little earlier
✨ Adding another piece of fruit or veg to your day
✨ Finding one thing to be grateful for

Small steps matter. 💚

Quiz night complete! 🎉

What a week — getting chicks and hosting a quiz evening! We took a break last year as, honestly, I always find the organisation beforehand a lot.

However, when it all comes together, with the support from the team, appreciation from parents, and generosity from local businesses donating raffle prizes, it’s hard not to look back on the event with a real sense of achievement.

A special thank you to the Royal Oak for their beautiful marquee — it really does make the perfect setting — and the food was delicious.

Well done to team “Getting Quizzes With It” for winning by just one point, thanks to their balloon car going literally millimetres further in front! We absolutely love the competitiveness that comes out 😂

We raised an amazing £882 profit, which will go towards the outside area we are working tirelessly on. 🌿

As always, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed. Without all of you, we simply wouldn’t have had the success we did.

I think we’ll have another year off though….😂

Far too cute not to share! 🐥

Nine out of the 10 eggs hatched and the chicks have come to live with us for the weekend (the boys are so excited!). Whilst the house is currently very quiet, I know it won’t be for much longer — and it certainly wasn’t at nursery this week!

I’ve just sat and watched them fall asleep on each other, only to wake themselves up again, for over 10 minutes. It’s like having a newborn baby all over again, where you just watch them sleep and suddenly wonder where the time has gone.

Don’t worry, I’m not broody at all 😂 Whilst I’m loving every minute of this, I’ll be very happy to return them on Monday for the children to enjoy again.

🐣 The chicks have arrived 🐣

So much excitement today as our 10 eggs arrived! Over the next 48 hours, we’re hoping to see them begin to hatch 🤍

Such a lovely, real-life experience for the children to watch and learn as they observe the magic of new life unfolding right in front of them.

We can’t wait to see how many little chicks say hello 🐥✨

A week in photos at Little Laura’s ☀️

We’ve been lucky to enjoy sunshine all week — long may it continue into the weekend!

From celebrating World Earth Day to St George’s Day, the children have been exploring their history and developing a deeper understanding of the world around them.

The bluebells are in bloom, forest school has been in full swing, and we even took a walk to Cowdray Castle — with a bit of litter picking along the way 🌿

A week full of fresh air, discovery, and learning through play… and hopefully plenty of happily tired children by the end of it!

What a wonderful way to start the weekend—receiving such lovely feedback from those who attended our school readiness talk last night.

Louise and I were especially touched by an email from one parent. It truly captured why we do what we do and why we’re always willing to go the extra mile for our families. Knowing we can make a difference—even if it’s for just one person—makes it all worthwhile. But when you have over 10 families attending, you always hope each of them takes something away, and this email shows that they did.

“I just wanted to say how useful last night was and lots of good tips you’ve shared. It was also very normalising. I feel this is Little Laura’s going above and beyond (as usual) in supporting the parents and kiddies, giving so much of your time, and cakes!
Thank you so much. What a great start in life and education you’ve given him”
