What a lovely song about spiders, helping children to learn concepts around space, positional language and tempo. We will be trying this one out very soon and it would be wonderful if the learning continued at home 🕷 Lots of exposure helps to cement learning.

Spiders are mini beasts and have 8 legs.

In autumn, we often see more spiders and spider webs around our homes and gardens.

Spiders make webs to catch insects to eat.

Spider webs can look sparkly and beautiful when they have morning dew on them.

Spiders use their webs to help them catch flies and other tiny insects.

Spiders can be found in gardens, trees, under leaves and in houses.

Sensory activities provide lots of opportunities to develop skills in line with the EYFS, while allowing children to learn at their own pace through hands-on experiences.

🍚 Sensory rice trays
Scooping, filling and emptying containers gives children opportunities to develop their physical skills, hand-eye coordination and control. It also introduces early mathematical concepts such as more, less, full, empty and counting, while encouraging curiosity and exploration.

⭐ Peeling foam stickers
Peeling and placing stickers helps strengthen little fingers and develops fine motor skills, hand control and coordination. Children are also practising concentration, problem-solving and independence as they work out how to remove and position the stickers.

🧣 Sensory scarves and singing
Using scarves during songs creates wonderful opportunities for communication and language, movement and physical development. Children can copy actions, respond to rhythm, explore different ways of moving and build confidence joining in with familiar songs. 🎶

These simple and low cost experiences support so many areas of the EYFS, including Physical Development, Communication and Language, Mathematics, and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

My childcare setting is part of Operation Encompass.

Operation Encompass is a national police and education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children who experience Domestic Abuse.

Operation Encompass is in place in every police force in England and Wales, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.

Children were recognised as victims of domestic abuse in their own right in the 2021 Domestic Abuse Act.

There is a legislative requirement for police forces to share information with educational settings through Operation Encompass.

Through Operation Encompass .the police will share information with my setting about ALL police attended domestic abuse incidents which involve any of the children who are related to either of the adults involved in the incident. This sharing of information will occur PRIOR to the start of the next attending day. The notification will inform me about the context of the incident and will include the Voice of the Child.

Summer time ☀️ We have especially enjoyed our visits to and from the fire station and the police matrix team - which we are extremely grateful for them offering their time to us.

Visits from police officers and firefighters can provide rich learning opportunities across all areas of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage). They allow children to learn through real-life experiences, role play, questioning and practical demonstration and children are also learning about their community, occupations, people who help us and the wider world. They also provide excellent opportunities for children to develop confidence, curiosity, questioning skills, new vocabulary and imaginative play.

We have had lovely times at parks, gardens and also a trip to the sunflower field where the children got to explore nature and boost wellbeing. They each got to take home one flower for their chosen person/people and enjoy an icelolly. There's been crafts, creations, dancing, reading, singing and playing with lots of friends too - just one more week of the holidays left after this one. May there be more sunshine and memories made 🌞

🌱 Growing with Young Children 🌱

Gardening is a fantastic way to support children's learning across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) while encouraging curiosity, independence, and a love of the natural world.

🌼 Communication and Language – Children develop new vocabulary as they talk about plants, insects, weather, and the changing seasons. They ask questions, make predictions, and share their discoveries.

🌱 Physical Development – Digging, planting seeds, watering, and using child-sized gardening tools help strengthen fine and gross motor skills and build coordination.

❤️ Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Caring for living things teaches responsibility, patience, confidence, and teamwork as children work together to nurture their garden.

🌍 Understanding the World – Children explore life cycles, growth, weather, habitats, and sustainability through real-life experiences. They begin to understand how plants grow and why they are important.

🎨 Expressive Arts and Design – Nature inspires creativity through leaf printing, flower art, nature collages, imaginative play, and creating with natural materials.

📚 Literacy – Enjoy stories about gardens and nature, create plant diaries, label pots, and encourage children to talk and draw about what they observe.

🔢 Mathematics – Count seeds, measure plant growth, compare sizes, recognise patterns, and explore concepts such as more, less, taller, and shorter.

The children harvested their carrots and radishes recently and got to take some home.

The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge in Middlesbrough libraries is currently underway! Running until September 30, it invites children ages 4 to 11 to read six library books over the holidays. This year's theme is "Read to the Beat!"—a celebration of music and stories.

Events and activities for a variety of ages are available to be booked over the Summer holidays. Please see below pictures for more details.
