Charlie Sandison Inspires Young Athletes

A former pupil who was placed 24th in the mass start in the Virgin London Marathon last weekend - and produced his best personal time of 2 hours 25 minutes - returned to Glenalmond this week.
Charlie Sandison (Skrine's, 2008-13) went for a run around the Glenalmond Golf Course with some members of our Running Club before addressing our pupils and staff as part of our Athlete Development Programme.
Among his key messages during an inspirational talk was that it is the way you respond on the occasions when you fail to meet your goals that really shapes who you are. Thanks Charlie! Read more 👉https://www.glenalmondcollege.co.uk/news/school-news/charlie-sandison-inspires-young-athletes

Our Upper Sixth Geographers have began the first of four days collecting fieldwork data for their individual pieces of A-level coursework. They will spend two days in Dundee (human Geography) followed by two days in Glen Clova (physical Geography).
Pictured here are Scarlett and Kirsty with Mr Mason. They are investigating whether or not Dundee really is a ‘15 minute city’ and what better way to find out than by using Dundee’s electric bike scheme! #GlenalmondAcademic #GlenalmondFieldwork #greentravel Dundee City Council Dundee - One City, Many Discoveries

Could there be a more beautiful place to go to school.....? Many thanks to Dr Wilkinson for these lovely pictures taken yesterday during the first of three Sunday canoe trips when eight adventurous pupils took to the water on the River Garry. The majority of the group were novices receiving instruction in basic boat trim and forward paddling upstream before heading down to the Linn of Tummel for a spot of lunch (with fire pit and toasted marshmallows). The autumn weather was particularly kind and no unplanned swims were reported! #GlenalmondOutdoors #perthshirescotland

One of our traditions is that our prefects’ jackets are handed down year-on-year with the name labels of each year preserved. This year, however, it was felt some restorative work was required and our thanks to the brilliant Label Lady has carefully reconstructed and repaired two that were in very bad shape. 👏 #GlenalmondLife

Our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Army Section Field Day activities this week featured an introduction to a range of skills, including shelter building and survival skills. All pupils in Fourth Form take part in our CCF programme and through the year they experience a range of excellent team-building and leadership skills as part of this as well as an introduction to the career opportunities in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. #GlenalmondCCF Cadet Training Team Scotland

The Royal Navy section of our Combined Cadet Force in Fourth Form went on a fleet tender to Rothesay from Greenock this week. Our cadets took the opportunity to steer the boat themselves and use charts and other equipment to navigate. They also had an in-depth workshop on a variety of knots which they really enjoyed! Well done all. Cadet Training Team Scotland Royal Navy Recruitment #GlenalmondCCF

Perthshire dry ice specialist thinks big and green after securing major funding

Two former Glenalmond pupils are in the headlines today for their trailblazing company Dry Ice Scotland. Richard and Ed Nimmons have acquired Scotland’s first carbon capture system, currently being commissioned at their site near Dumfries.
“We invested in the £4 million system as the product we produce is dry ice, which is CO2 in solid form. By liquifying our own CO2 and manufacturing dry ice at source, we can avoid the issues of national shortage and provide a secure supply for the pharmaceutical industry.” The brothers were both Matheson’s boys with very fond memories of their time at Coll and send their regards to their Housemaster at the time, Mr Wright. Best wishes from all at Coll to you both! https://www.scotsman.com/business/perthshire-dry-ice-specialist-thinks-big-and-green-after-securing-major-funding-3409027
