🏆 And that’s a wrap on our KHS Level 1 group! 🏆

What can we say about this fantastic group? From day one, they came through our doors with the right attitude, gave us 100% effort and showed respect in abundance.

Every one of them brought something different to the team:

🔨 Harry – with his brilliant eye for detail
💪 Kayden – with his great attitude and willingness to learn
👏 Fynn – with his fantastic work ethic and determination
🙌 Josh – with his “I’ll give it a go” attitude, never afraid to take on a challenge
🤝 Rio– a real team player, always willing to support others and make sure everyone was part of the task

This group took on everything we threw at them — from team-building and personal development challenges to learning new practical skills across the trades — and they approached it all with enthusiasm.

But what impressed us most wasn’t just what they learned; it was how they developed as a group. Their confidence grew, their skills developed and they backed each other every step of the way.

It has been an absolute pleasure having them at Community Trade Hub, and we’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved.

🔥 Kirkcaldy High School Level 1 – Week 9 🔥

🏆 THE CHALLENGE WEEK! 🏆

Week 9 was all about putting everything the pupils have learned into practice — with less instruction, more independence and a real opportunity to show how far they have come.

The pupils were given a mystery selection of ingredients and challenged to plan and create their own dishes. They had to research recipes, make decisions, manage their time and work independently to turn the ingredients available to them into a finished meal.

And they absolutely delivered! 👏

From lamb dishes and steak pie to curries, pasta, homemade brownies and cupcakes, the standard of food produced was fantastic — but for us, the biggest success was what was happening behind the cooking.

We saw pupils problem-solving, communicating, managing tasks, showing initiative and having the confidence to make their own decisions. These are exactly the transferable skills we want pupils to develop at CTH — skills they can carry into school, further training, employment and everyday life.

Challenge Week also gives pupils the opportunity to recognise their own progress. Tasks they may have needed support with at the beginning of the programme are now being approached with greater confidence and independence.

That’s why we deliver hands-on learning. It isn’t only about what pupils make — it’s about what they develop along the way. 💪🌟

🏁 LMA Level 1 – Week 4 🔧
Another great day with our LMA Level 1 pupils, with this week’s focus on engine maintenance and developing their understanding of mechanical systems.

After breakfast, the pupils got their PPE on and headed to Buckhaven, where they worked hands-on with the engines — removing key components, replacing head gaskets and rebuilding the engines before correctly torquing the head bolts.

Sessions like this allow pupils to learn by doing, building practical ability, confidence, problem-solving and an understanding of why accuracy and following procedures are so important in mechanics.

After lunch, the group had some time on the kart simulators, before returning to mechanics to complete their weekly journals and reflect on what they had learned.

A brilliant day combining STEM learning, practical skills and personal development in an environment where pupils can get involved, learn and enjoy the experience. 🏁🔧👏

Levenmouth Level 1 – Week 7 | Project Week 1
This week marked the start of the group’s community project, putting the skills they have developed throughout the programme into practice.

Working in two teams, the pupils began building two noticeboards that will be donated back to the community. The project gives their learning a real purpose — following measurements, using tools safely and accurately, problem-solving and working together to produce something that will have a genuine use beyond the workshop.

Alongside progressing their PDA, project weeks are about bringing everything together: practical ability, communication, teamwork, focus and taking responsibility for the quality of their work.

🔨 LMA Level 1 – Week 1 | Building the Foundations 🔨

Today we welcomed our new LMA Level 1 group to Community Trade Hub!

The first day is all about creating the right foundations. We started with team-building activities designed to help the young people settle into a new environment, build relationships, communicate with one another and begin developing confidence within the group. 🤝

Following induction and enrolment, the students began working towards their Personal Development Award, giving them the opportunity to recognise and develop their own skills, strengths and progress throughout the programme.

Then it was into the workshop, where we went right back to the fundamentals and introduced the group to a range of hand tools, including measuring tapes, screwdrivers, hammers and hand saws. 🛠️

Getting these basics right is important. Before progressing onto more advanced tools and projects, we want every student to develop accuracy, safe working practices, tool control, patience and confidence in their own ability.

For their first session, the group did extremely well, and we were particularly impressed with the accuracy and quality of some of the cuts produced. 👏

Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue building on these foundations — developing practical ability, confidence, communication, teamwork and problem-solving, while encouraging each young person to recognise how far they are progressing along the way.

🏁🔧 WAID Academy – Level 1, Week 7 | STEM in Action 🔧🏁

This week was about much more than simply working on karts — the WAID Academy Level 1 group were putting STEM skills into practice, using engineering, problem-solving and logical thinking to understand how mechanical systems work.

After breakfast and getting into their PPE, the students were challenged to remove, inspect and service kart engines. Rather than just following instructions, they were encouraged to think about why each component is needed, how the different parts work together and what can cause an engine to develop a fault.

From changing oil and cleaning carburettors to inspecting components for wear or damage, the group were developing a better understanding of engine performance, maintenance and fault finding. 🔧

The learning continued with work on a race kart, where students repaired the stub axles and used laser equipment to accurately align the steering. This brought engineering and maths together, showing the group how small measurements and adjustments can have a big impact on the handling and performance of a kart. 📐🏎️

Other students were given two engines with faults and had to work through the problem systematically — inspecting, servicing and testing before refitting them to the kart.

Then came the best part… the test! 👀🏁

The kart was taken outside, started up and the repair was a success! A brilliant moment for the students to see that the skills, decisions and problem-solving they had used in the workshop had produced a real working result.

👏 Special mention to Tyler for some excellent work today!

The group finished by completing their Week 7 journals and taking part in team building — reflecting not only on what they did, but what they learned and why it worked.

🔨 Senior Phase – Construction Skills 🐦🏠

Today, our Senior Phase group were learning the basics of reading a plan drawing and following it accurately to complete their birdhouse project.

The group started by cutting 150mm strips of plywood before taking their measurements, marking out their timber and making their cuts using the chop saw. It’s great to see how much more confident and capable they are becoming when using the tools and equipment. 👏

Once all the pieces were cut, they began pinning their birdhouses together, working brilliantly as a team, sharing tools and making sure everyone had the support they needed.

To finish, they added the final touches by painting their birdhouses and adding feeder trays. 🎨🐦

A fantastic effort from the whole group today. They showed focus, teamwork and a strong work ethic, making sure every task was completed to a high standard.

🏗️ Auchmuty Level 1 – Week 5 🏗️

Another busy day for our Auchmuty Level 1 group! 👏

The group started by working towards their Exploring Wellbeing qualification, looking at individual and group wellbeing before researching charities and organisations that provide support.

They then headed into the workshop for their skirting and framing task. 🔨 Using measuring tapes, pencils and set squares, they measured and marked their skirting before using the chop saw to make straight and 45° cuts. The group worked accurately and produced some really high-quality work! 📐👏

Back upstairs, they continued their Improving Wellbeing qualification, setting personal targets and creating a weekly plan covering the trades, resources and timescales involved.

⭐ Special mention to Archie, who showed a fantastic attitude towards the paperwork today — his research was spot on! 👏

🏁 LMA Seniors – Day 2, Week 1 🏁

Another brilliant hands-on day for our LMA Seniors! 👏

After breakfast, the students got their PPE on and headed into the workshop to carry out a post-race service on Scottish Kart Club’s Kart 67. 🔧🏁

They removed, cleaned and serviced both engines, worked on the rear axle and braking system, and inspected and cleaned the chassis after its latest race.

The afternoon focused on kart setup, learning about caster, camber, Ackerman and steering tracking, before everything was reassembled and the seat adjusted to suit the driver.

A fantastic day developing practical skills, teamwork and real-world motorsport experience. Well done everyone! 👏
