🚨 QUALIFY AS A PILATES TEACHER… IN ONE WEEK?! 🚨
Apparently, it’s a thing.

And every time I see one of these adverts, I have the same thought…

I’ve never seen:

🚗 “Become a fully qualified vehicle technician in 7 days!”
🐾 “Train to be a vet — purely online — and qualify next Sunday!”
🎖️ “Want to be a Royal Marine Commando? Just study from home in your own time!”

Because we understand that some professions require time, education, practical experience, supervision and proper assessment.

So why should teaching Pilates be any different?

Being a Pilates teacher isn’t simply learning a list of exercises and remembering what they’re called.

It’s understanding movement, anatomy, alignment, teaching skills, modifications, contraindications, communication, observation and — crucially — how to work safely with REAL PEOPLE.

And there’s something rather important about actually being in a room with other human beings while you learn to teach.

Feeling movement.
Seeing movement.
Practising hands-on teaching.
Receiving feedback.
Making mistakes.
Correcting them.
Learning to adapt.

Because your future clients won't be little videos on a screen.

They'll be people.
Different bodies.
Different abilities.
Different needs.
Different histories.

And they deserve a teacher who has been properly trained to work with them.

We’re not saying that every online course is bad.

We ARE saying:

👉 Look beyond the marketing.
👉 Ask how much practical training is included.
👉 Ask who is teaching you.
👉 Ask how you are assessed.
👉 Ask what happens when you finish.
👉 And most importantly… ask whether the course genuinely prepares you to teach.

Because when it comes to Pilates teacher training…

“Qualified in 7 days” sounds impressive.

But “properly trained to teach” is what really matters.

❤️ Want to train properly?
Our next YMCA Awards Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Pilates starts in just 5 weeks.
A comprehensive, face-to-face training experience designed to give you the knowledge, practical skills, confidence and understanding needed to become a safe and effective Pilates teacher.

Train properly. Teach confidently. Teach Pilates well.

Clinical Pilates — it’s all about the observation 👀

One of the comments I often hear after Clinical Pilates is, “Where did that hour go?” And I take that as a real compliment! 😊

For me, it means people have been concentrating, focusing on their movement and really engaging with what they are doing.

But there’s something you may not notice when you’re taking part in one of my sessions…

I don’t do the exercises with you.

Instead, I’m constantly moving around the room and changing my teaching position so that I can observe each person. I’m watching how you move, where you may be compensating, your alignment, your control and how an exercise might need to be adapted for you.

And last night was a perfect example.

In our group of just 8 participants, we had people with hip replacements, knee replacements, shoulder mobility issues, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis — and a whole range of abilities and individual needs.

That’s why Clinical Pilates is so much more than simply demonstrating exercises and counting repetitions.

It’s about seeing the individual in front of me, adapting the exercise and making sure everyone is working safely and appropriately for their own body.

Eight people might sound like a small group — and that’s exactly the point. ❤️

Turn your passion for Pilates into a career with our YMCA Awards Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Pilates.

There’s a reason so many of our students choose to train with Modern Pilates.

We believe Pilates teacher training is best experienced face to face.

You can read, watch and study online — but learning how to teach Pilates is different.

You need to practise.
You need to teach.
You need expert feedback.
And you need experienced tutors there to guide, correct and support you.

At Modern Pilates, you’ll spend your practical training days in the studio with our experienced tutors and other aspiring Pilates instructors.

✅ Clinical Modern Pilates exercises, including adaptations and modifications
✅ How to plan, deliver and evaluate safe, effective classes
✅ 20 hours of personal practice to develop your own technique
✅ Client consultation, planning and programming
✅ Professional business planning to help you build your Pilates career

Right… I need to get something off my chest!

I’ve been delivering YMCA Awards Health & Fitness qualifications since 1999.

That’s 27 years of teaching people face-to-face.

Twenty-seven years of demonstrations, practical sessions, conversations, questions, mistakes, corrections, laughter, nerves, confidence-building — and watching learners develop into professionals.

And I’ve loved every minute of it.

I’ve taught some genuinely fantastic people over the years, and one of the most rewarding parts of being a tutor has always been seeing that lightbulb moment when something finally clicks.

So I have to admit, I find the current move towards online-only fitness qualifications quite difficult to accept.

I understand why it’s happening.

Online learning is convenient. It can be cheaper. It allows people to study around work and family commitments.

But convenience and quality aren't necessarily the same thing.

I genuinely struggle with the idea that someone can become qualified as a Personal Trainer or Pilates Teacher without spending
meaningful time physically learning, practising and being observed.

These aren't purely academic professions.

You’re going to work with people and their bodies.
You need to know what correct movement looks like.
You need to be able to spot poor technique.
You need to know how to physically demonstrate and coach an exercise.
You need to communicate with a client standing in front of you.
You need to adapt when something doesn't work.
And perhaps most importantly, you need to have those skills observed and challenged by someone who knows what they're looking for.

A multiple-choice question can tell me that you know the theory.
It can't necessarily tell me that you can actually coach someone.
A video can demonstrate an exercise.
It doesn't necessarily tell me that you can teach it.
And completing an online module can give you a certificate.
It doesn't automatically give you competence.

I'm certainly not anti-online learning. Technology has an enormous role to play in education, and there are plenty of things that can be taught extremely effectively online.

But surely we need to be asking ourselves:

What is the best way to educate the professional — not simply the easiest way to deliver the qualification?

After 27 years, I still believe there is enormous value in getting people together in a room, getting them moving, letting them practise, letting them make mistakes, and having an experienced tutor there to say:

"Stop. Let's observe the PT/Teacher deliver and offer some constructive feedback"

Maybe I'm old-fashioned.
Maybe I'm just passionate about standards.

But I would hate for the next generation of Personal Trainers and Pilates Teachers to miss out on the very thing that helped so many of us become good at what we do:

Learning from people, not just learning from screens.

And that's my rant over! 😂. I feel better for getting that off my chest!!!

I'd genuinely love to hear what other tutors, trainers and fitness professionals think.

Where do you draw the line between embracing technology and compromising practical education?
