πŸ“Š Make assessment evidence work harder for your post-16 GCSE Maths learners!

How can we use real assessment evidence to identify the concepts that matter mostβ€”and understand why learners struggle with them?

This practical workshop brings together real exam questions, performance data, mark schemes and examiner insights to explore the challenges faced by post-16 GCSE Maths learners and the approaches that can make a difference.

During the session, we'll:
βœ… Examine real GCSE exam questions and performance data
βœ… Explore common areas of difficulty and why learners struggle
βœ… Use mark schemes and examiner insights to understand what successful responses look like
βœ… Identify the key concepts and skills that can have the greatest impact on attainment
βœ… Discuss practical approaches for improving understanding and addressing misconceptions
βœ… Share ideas for using assessment evidence to inform teaching and intervention

You'll leave with actionable strategies, discussion ideas and resources that you can use straight away to support your post-16 GCSE Maths learners and help them make meaningful progress.

πŸ“Š Why do so many high-attaining mathematicians lose momentum after primary school?

Pupils in England perform exceptionally well in primary mathematics, yet by Year 9 progress often stalls. Alarmingly, around half of disadvantaged pupils who were top attainers at primary school do not go on to achieve a Grade 7 or above at GCSE.

In this thought-provoking session, we'll explore findings from a survey of 2,000 pupils and parents that sheds new light on this challenge. The results reveal a striking shift in attitudes towards maths during the move to secondary school, with high attainers becoming significantly more likely to describe maths as boring from Year 7 onwards.

During the session, you'll:
βœ… Explore the latest survey findings from pupils and parents
βœ… Examine why progress can stall for high-attaining students
βœ… Consider the particular challenges faced by disadvantaged learners
βœ… Debate leading theories and test them against the evidence
βœ… Discuss practical, evidence-informed strategies to maintain challenge and engagement
βœ… Take away ideas for supporting and protecting your brightest mathematicians

If you're interested in challenge, progression, equity and helping high-attaining students fulfil their potential, this session offers valuable insights and practical food for thought.

πŸ’» Ready to start creating with Desmos Notebooks?

This interactive workshop introduces the new Desmos Notebook platform, launched earlier this year, and provides a practical, hands-on opportunity to explore its potential for teaching and learning mathematics.

During the session, you'll:
βœ… Explore the capabilities and key features of Desmos Notebooks
βœ… See a notebook created live, step-by-step
βœ… Learn the fundamentals of notebook design and authoring
βœ… Have dedicated time to create your own notebook
βœ… Gain confidence using a powerful new tool for classroom learning

This is a highly interactive workshop where you'll spend much of the session building your own notebook, supported by live demonstrations and guidance along the way.

⚠️ Please bring a laptop or tablet with internet access. A phone is not suitable for authoring notebooks.

Whether you're new to Desmos or looking to expand your digital teaching toolkit, you'll leave with practical experience, a notebook of your own, and ideas ready to take back to the classroom.

πŸ’‘ β€œMy students never remember formulae!” Sound familiar?

What if students didn’t just memorise formulaeβ€”but felt like they had discovered them for themselves?

Through practical demonstrations, storytelling and the application of everyday knowledge, this engaging workshop explores how teachers can help students uncover key mathematical formulae and concepts in memorable, meaningful ways.

You'll explore:
βœ… Areas of 2D shapes
βœ… Volume and surface area of prisms
βœ… Polygon theory
βœ… Compound measures
βœ… Pythagoras' Theorem

Leave with powerful classroom approaches that build understanding, improve retention and help students experience the excitement of mathematical discovery.

🧩 What if fluency practice could develop automatic recall and problem-solving at the same time?

In this hands-on workshop, you'll explore Area Mazesβ€”engaging puzzles where students use familiar multiplication and division facts while developing geometric reasoning, decision-making and mathematical thinking.

During the session, you'll:
βœ… Solve Area Mazes collaboratively
βœ… Explore how fluency and problem-solving can work together
βœ… Develop students' reasoning without increasing arithmetic demand
βœ… Investigate geometric relationships, proportionality and structure
βœ… Take away classroom-ready puzzles and activities

Leave with practical resources and a fresh approach to raising challenge while strengthening the fluency skills students already possess.

πŸŽ“ The move from primary to secondary school is about much more than transition.

Year 7 offers a unique opportunity to build on pupils' existing mathematical understanding and establish the habits, language and ways of thinking that support long-term success in mathematics.

Drawing on experience across primary and secondary education, curriculum development, assessment and current research, this session explores effective approaches to teaching Year 7 mathematics and creating strong foundations for future learning.

During the session, you'll:
βœ… Explore how continuity between primary and secondary phases supports learning
βœ… Consider the role of mathematical talk in developing understanding
βœ… Examine effective use of representations and classroom pedagogy
βœ… Discuss ways to help pupils make meaningful mathematical connections
βœ… Explore strategies for developing confidence and independence in young mathematicians
βœ… Reflect on evidence-informed approaches to Key Stage 3 teaching

Whether you're new to teaching Year 7 or an experienced practitioner, this session will provide practical ideas, professional reflection and valuable discussion about how we can make the early years of secondary mathematics as successful as possible.
