We are a family run business owned by husband and wife team Liz and Ed Raine. We operate two day care nurseries based in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Little Rascals opened its doors in July 2007 providing quality care for children aged 12 weeks to 5 years. Since then the setting has gone from strength to strength gaining a great local reputation. In July 2010 the hard work and dedication of the staff gained recognition, when the setting was awarded OUTSTANDING in every area of their practice by OFSTED. Little rascals is located just outside of Melton town centre, off Nottingham road. Our building is a converted detached house which has beed thoughtfully decorated with light colours and soft furnishings to achieve a homely feel. Our setting occupies a large plot of land allowing for parking facilities at the rear of the premises and plenty of outdoor space for the children to use each and every day. As proprietor Liz takes a very hands on approach to the day to day running of the setting. Having recently become a mother herself, Liz understands the anxieties and stresses that every parent faces when leaving their child in the care of others for the first time. Little Rascals aims to provide a stimulating, homely environment where children feel loved and respected and parents feel happy in the knowledge that their child is being cared for by experienced and dedicated staff. From painting and exploring pumpkins to enjoying our favourite songs together, our little Rascals have been busy following their interests and finding new ways to explore the world around them.
Whether experimenting with colours, investigating the textures and shapes of pumpkins or joining in with familiar songs and actions, every experience brings opportunities to learn, develop new skills and share special moments with friends.
Here’s a little look at what we’ve been getting up to this week!

Our Little Rascals have been busy making their very own pizzas! From kneading and stretching the dough to grating cheese and chopping their chosen ingredients, there was plenty to explore along the way.
The excitement continued as we watched our pizzas cook in the pizza oven, observing how the ingredients changed before finally getting to sample our creations!
Experiences like these offer so many opportunities for learning, from developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to exploring textures, smells and tastes. The children also practised their independence, made choices and discovered what happens when ingredients are combined and cooked.

A big thank you to one of our Little Rascals grandparents for kindly bringing in a bees’ nest for us to investigate!
Our little explorers got up close with their magnifying glasses, looking carefully at the different shapes, textures and colours. We talked about bees, where honey comes from and the important role bees play in nature.
These real-life experiences encourage children to ask questions, share ideas and make their own discoveries. By exploring something from the natural world, our Little Rascals are developing their observation skills, building their understanding of the world around them and following their natural curiosity.

Our Little Rascals babies have been exploring the magic of bubbles! Watching them float, reaching out to touch them and seeing them pop creates so many wonderful opportunities for sensory exploration.
Through these simple moments of play, our babies are developing their hand-eye coordination, tracking moving objects with their eyes and discovering cause and effect as they reach out to catch those bubbles.
Sometimes, the simplest experiences create the biggest opportunities for learning!

This week we’ve been following the children’s curiosity as they explored the sights, sounds, textures and treasures of autumn. Conkers, pumpkins, leaves and other natural resources have sparked lots of opportunities for investigating, collecting, creating and discovering.
We’ve enjoyed a special Goldilocks storytime with Rosie, with the children becoming immersed in the story, as well as exploring woodwork, getting creative and making the most of our outdoor spaces.
We love seeing where the children’s ideas take them — turning everyday resources into opportunities for play, experimentation and new discoveries.

At Little Rascals, we believe some of the best learning happens when children have the freedom to explore, investigate and make their own discoveries.
A collection of leaves can become a creative invitation. Sticks can be counted, sorted, built with or simply collected. A puddle can spark questions, experiments and plenty of splashing!
Being surrounded by natural, open-ended resources gives children the freedom to follow their own ideas, use their imaginations and learn through hands-on experiences.
Nature doesn’t need to be complicated — it simply gives children endless possibilities to wonder, explore and learn.

We’re so excited to finally show you our brand-new Outdoor Classroom!
The space is now ready to explore, filled with lots of new and exciting resources for our Little Rascals to discover, investigate and enjoy.
Some of our Little Rascals even got involved in putting together some of the flat-pack furniture — a little teamwork before the exploring could begin!
We can’t wait to see all the curious ideas, creations, discoveries and adventures that happen in our new space.

Our little ones have been busy exploring playdough alongside a collection of natural materials, including leaves, sticks and pumpkins. They’ve been pressing, rolling, poking and shaping the playdough, adding different materials to create their own ideas and designs. With no set end result, the children are free to experiment and see what happens as they play.
This type of open-ended, child-led play encourages creativity, imagination and problem-solving, while developing fine motor skills and strengthening little hands. Exploring the different textures, shapes and smells also provides a wonderful sensory experience and helps children connect their play with the natural world.

This week we’ve been embracing the changing season and exploring all things autumn. The children have been getting hands-on with conkers, leaves and pumpkins, investigating their different colours, shapes, textures and sizes. From collecting and exploring autumn treasures to getting creative with painting, there have been lots of opportunities to experiment, make choices and follow their own ideas.
We also enjoyed a lovely Sing and Sign session with Laura, joining in with familiar songs, actions and signs. These sessions are a great way to support communication while having lots of fun together.
A busy week of autumn discovery, creativity, singing and learning through play!

Today we’re putting the spotlight on Sarah, who has been part of the Little Rascals family for an amazing 9 years!
Before joining us, Sarah built up a wealth of experience working in schools, predominantly supporting children with SEND, bringing a wealth of knowledge and understanding to her role.
Sarah is our Welby Lane Pre-School Lead and has a real love for all things outdoors. She especially enjoys creating opportunities for children to explore, discover and learn through their surroundings.
Sarah loves working in the early years because she knows she can make a real difference to children and their families. We’re so lucky to have her as part of our team!
