Maths Unravelled

Maths Unravelled I have experience in triaging maths difficulties and working with each student to find the best way to help them.

I can help you clear the blocks to understanding and de-mystify topics, no matter what your level.

Just to let you now that I am putting my fees from 23rd February to £45 per hour for GCSE, £60 per hour for A-level and £70 per hour for University for all new students. Existing students (or new students beginning before 23rd February) will stay at the same rates. The free 10-15 min trial still applies.

The new year started with a bang - literally! My broken wrist may be healing in the wrong place, necessitating surgery, but lessons proceed as normal! GCSE lessons are £35 an hour, A-level £45 and University £50. Whether face-to-face or online, all lessons are specifically tailored to each individual student.

Hopefully outlining my approach to conducting a lesson will be helpful:

My main focus is always to help students feel confident while in class, so I always start each lesson by asking what their current topic is and checking whether help is needed or not. [I never just accept their ‘No’, but probe with a few questions…...]

If there is nothing, or we do it quickly, I then focus on algebra, particularly equations, as that is embedded in almost every other topic. A brief re-visit every few weeks of what has already been covered helps to keep it alive.

Another key focus is helping each student to actually read questions and develop appropriate approaches to problem solving, but rather than teach this as a separate topic I try to integrate it via the topics that we cover. If we uncover any trip points we work on those, too.

I also try to build on what each individual student tends to be good at. E.g. If Geometry is a strength for a GCSE student, that can be pushed to level 9 work to give both confidence and extra marks come the exam. If a topic is a real block, we will chip away at it but there is no point in pushing it to a high level.

So the plan is generic, but the ex*****on of it is very specific to what each student needs and to what I uncover as we go along.

As the new term starts I await with interest the impact of an unsettled couple of years. If any student has ‘lost confidence’, it may just take a few lessons to get them back on track. I am continuing with online only tuition, but note my post above about a free trial. An hour is GCSE £30, A-level £40, degree £50.

This is not a special offer - it stands all the time. I am happy to give anyone a free 10-15 min trial of an online lesson, with content e-mailed to the student at the end. This should provide you with a way to test if this is a method that would work for you, with no obligation to continue. Location & time zone no obstacle ....

Twice recently I've been asked if I tutor Physics. I can do Physics but wouldn't dream of teaching it without experience of having taught it in schools or marking it for exam boards. To do is one level, to teach is the next, but to effectively tutor I believe you have to be able to triage the particular problems that students have and quickly assess which of the available routes is best suited to take them down.

Already student numbers are creeping up. I'm not surprised that a lot of students are struggling given that they missed so many months of classroom teaching. Hopefully, with hard work, catch up can be effective.

While I would dearly love to get back to face-to-face tuition, I will only be offering online tuition for the foreseeable future. Still happy to give a free ten minute taster online session to let you assess if it is a method that works for you. Message me for details.

As schools return this week many students may start to panic about what they have missed. Perhaps just a few lessons would put them back on track with no need to commit to tuition for the rest of the year.

Heard this morning that it now makes 100% of my A-level students got into University. So pleased that there are such positive outcomes after such a difficult and uncertain six months. Work hard, and enjoy it. Well done.

Remember that I have a wealth of experience of teaching live and interactively online. I usually use skype and screen share, but with zoom group teaching is also possible.
