Leadership is evolving.

So are we.

Here’s what our new pathways mean in practice.

Leaders are being held to a higher standard than even a couple of years ago. Performance is more visible. Decisions get challenged. Budgets are tighter. And leaders still need to bring people with them.

Our new programmes and pathways are our response. We’re moving from one set of standard leadership programmes to themed pathways.

Leadership stays at the core, but the pathway gives organisations a clearer route to build the capability they actually need, by level, role, and business priority.

Our starting point is simple: Human-centred. Data-intelligent. Performance-driven. Leaders need judgement that holds up under pressure, and the ability to interpret performance without losing the human side of work.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share the pathway breakdown, who each programme is for, and how to take the next step.

At Fuel Learning, we’re proud to work alongside brilliant women leading across rail, FMCG, logistics, facilities and beyond.

We see leaders building confidence, setting standards, and delivering measurable change in their organisations.

The rail sector is under constant pressure to deliver safety, reliability, and customer confidence, while also building the next generation of leaders.

Julie Hasdell-Flood, Senior Manager for Leadership and Management Development at GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway), puts it clearly. With around 7,500 people engaged across development activity, from driver roles through to leadership programmes at multiple levels, the focus has to be on future relevance.

Not just running learning but rethinking how talent is developed and delivered so it genuinely prepares people for what’s coming.

That links directly to this year’s International Women’s Day theme, 'Give to Gain'. When organisations give real development, visible impact, and the right opportunities, they gain leaders who can perform under pressure.

Share one way someone has given to your growth, and what it changed for you.

On episode 2 of 'Talking Apprenticeships', Steph Oerton, Head of People and Leadership at Network Rail shares what leadership apprenticeships make possible in a large, complex organisation, and why developing managers properly isn’t optional when the environment keeps shifting.

This year’s theme is Skills for Life. For leadership, that means practical capability that holds up in the real world: leading people well, making sound decisions under pressure, communicating clearly, and delivering results through others.

That’s exactly why organisations like Network Rail use leadership apprenticeships as a serious development route for both current managers and future leaders.

Given the scale and pace of the rail sector, you need leaders who can operate across teams, stakeholders, and changing priorities without losing sight of safety, service, and standards.

This episode looks at how leadership apprenticeships support Network Rail to: build consistent leadership capability across a large, diverse workforce
develop confident managers who can lead day-to-day operations and lead change, create a stronger pipeline by backing high-potential people early
keep learning tied to real work, real outcomes, and measurable improvement

Track & Trade is our exclusive peer-to-peer platform for our Rail Industry leaders.

It exists for one reason: to help people exchange experience, skills and practical expertise across the network, so great work doesn’t stay stuck in silos.

Brilliant work happens every day across rail. Smart planning, innovative scheduling, and effective resource strategies. But too often, the wins stay inside one team or one depot, and the industry wastes time solving the same problem again.

Track & Trade makes hands-on expertise shareable. It gives our Rail Industry leaders a place to connect weekly, swap practical approaches, and learn directly from colleagues who’ve already been there.

It’s where real “how we did it” knowledge belongs, so others can move faster and avoid repeating the same mistakes.

In the last few weeks alone, we’ve seen learners share various offers and needs in areas such as:

◾New station operations and platform safety.

◾Digital signalling and trackside processes.

◾Access planning and site management.

◾Contract bid work and tenders.

If you are involved in our rail-specific programmes, this is the moment to make the most of Track and Trade as we head into National Apprenticeship Week and shine a light on the real impact leaders are having across the industry.

National Apprenticeship Week starts in one week. To see how you can take part, explore our dedicated hub:

Today, Jessica Holbrook, Apprenticeship and Training Manager at SOCOTEC UK shares how Fuel Learning’s programmes are giving their leaders exactly that.

She talks about how:

The flexibility of our leadership apprenticeships means people can learn in a way that works alongside demanding roles

Each programme is built around the learner’s context, not a generic checklist

The learning gives leaders confidence to make tangible changes in their teams and across the organisation

Jessica’s insight is a powerful reminder of what can happen when development is connected to day-to-day work and real organisational goals. A huge thank you to Jessica for her thoughtful words and for the partnership with SOCOTEC.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we are inviting impactful leaders to help shape the next wave.

If you are on or have completed a leadership or management apprenticeship, you can now nominate a colleague who you believe should be on the leadership apprenticeship pathway.

Think about the person who is already stepping up, has real potential and would benefit from structured development and support.

By making a nomination, you will:
- Put a colleague forward for a place on a future leadership apprenticeship
- Help your organisation grow new leaders who deliver real results
- Be entered into a prize draw as a thank you for backing future talent

By making a nomination, you will strengthen your leadership pipeline and give someone the chance to grow in a way that has a genuine impact on your teams and your organisation.

You can find full details and the quick nomination form on our National Apprenticeship Week hub: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0rjCZD0

Leaders in high-demand roles are expected to absorb pressure, make sound decisions and stay present for everyone else.

Their own wellbeing often slips to the bottom of the list, yet it directly affects judgment, performance and impact.

To open National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we are sharing a first look at a new focus in our leadership content: Professional Wellbeing as a core capability.

In this teaser, Applied Psychologist and Content Development Partner for Fuel Learning, Dervla Gallen, introduces her live taster session on Monday, 9 February.

Dervla will share practical ways leaders can manage personal pressure, think clearly under strain and lead teams with both care and accountability.
