2026 – The Year of Reading! 📚✨

Where do we begin?

It’s not every day that a giant double-decker Story Bus arrives in your school car park! We are so thankful for The Works Story Bus for proving our children with this incredible opportunity 💙

From the moment the children arrived this morning, their faces lit up with excitement. They have spent the entire day immersed in the joy of stories and reading.

They explored the Story Bus, chose their very own book to take home, got creative, danced and read with Zog, met the fantastic author Jim Smith, created characters alongside him, and even had the opportunity to be drawn by Jim! It has been a day full of smiles, laughter and unforgettable memories.

Here’s just a small glimpse of our incredible day. We can’t wait to receive the official photos to share with you all! Keep an eye on The Works social media pages too – St Giles is out there! 🌟

We may be a small school, but we always strive to create the most amazing opportunities for our children. Days like today are a perfect reminder of what makes St Giles such a special place ✨

Here’s to many more magical memories with our amazing children, families and community. ❤️📖

🌟 Looking for a teacher led nursery with places available for September 2026, January 2027 or April 2027? Well, look no further! 🌟

Here’s just a small glimpse into the wonderful learning and fun our nursery children enjoyed today…

☀️ Good Morning & Phonics
We started our day by saying good morning to each other, helping everyone feel welcomed and ready for the day ahead. We then enjoyed our daily phonics session, where the children developed their listening skills, sound recognition and early reading foundations through fun, interactive activities.

🟡 Monday Means Homemade Playdough!
Every Monday, the children work together to make fresh playdough by following a simple recipe. They love voting for the colour and scent each week! This week they chose lemon, so we talked about the colour of lemons before adding yellow food colouring. To make it extra special, we finished it off with a sprinkle of glitter! ✨🍋

🌳 Forest School Adventures
The children then headed outside for a Forest School session with the wonderful Mrs Jackson. They had an amazing time exploring the outdoor environment and were especially excited to try out the new hammock!

🔵🔺🟨 Maths
We sang nursery rhymes together before exploring 2D shapes by identifying the shapes hidden in our mystery bag. The children then used their deliciously lemon-scented playdough to make shape prints, helping to reinforce their understanding of the different shapes through hands-on learning.

🔢 Following Their Interests
Some of the children noticed one of Reception’s ‘Must Do’ activities and eagerly asked if they could have a go at tracing their numbers to 10. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, curiosity and independence shine through.

🚲 Learning Through Play
Of course, there was plenty of time to enjoy our indoor and outdoor provision too! The children loved riding the trikes and scooters, exploring the mud kitchen, playing with water and sand, and making the most of all the exciting learning opportunities in the classroom alongside their friends.

This is just a small snapshot of a busy, fun-filled day of learning at nursery, where every day is packed with exciting opportunities to explore, discover and grow. 💛

If you’re looking for a nurturing, engaging environment for your little one, we’d love to welcome you. To find out more or arrange a visit, get in touch with us on 01629 56813 ☎️

Every child at St Giles created a mini masterpiece inspired by Kandinsky. Their artwork is proudly on display at the University of Derby alongside work from 33 schools across the DDAT Trust.

This afternoon, two of our children attended the exhibition opening with their parents and enjoyed looking at the fantastic work from the other schools.

We are so proud of our children and all the wonderful artwork on display across the trust. 💛
