Wing Chun is traditionally believed to have developed during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), although its exact origins remain uncertain. According to legend, the art was created by the Buddhist nun Ng Mui, who taught it to a young woman named Yim Wing Chun. She later refined the techniques into a practical system emphasizing efficiency, speed, and close-range combat. Historians suggest that Wing Chun may instead have evolved among southern Chinese martial artists and anti-Qing resistance groups. During the Qing era, the style spread through local communities and opera performers, laying the foundation for the martial art practiced worldwide today.
