✨🌈 Welcome to Our Magical Sensory Corner! 🌈✨

Our baby room has been transformed into a calming, curiosity-filled sensory haven… and the little ones absolutely love it! 💫

Soft, glowing lights shimmer gently around the space, our mesmerising bubble tube flows with calming movement, and baskets are filled with wonderful natural and textured materials just waiting to be explored. From soft fabrics and crinkly treasures to smooth wooden resources and reflective surfaces, every element has been carefully chosen to spark curiosity and wonder.

👶 Why is a sensory area so important?

In line with the Development Matters guidance, sensory play supports babies to:

✨ Build strong brain connections – Exploring different textures, lights and sounds helps develop early cognitive skills as babies begin to make sense of the world around them.
✨ Develop communication and language – Practitioners model simple words such as “bright”, “soft”, “bubble”, and “wow!” helping babies link words to their experiences.
✨ Strengthen physical development – Reaching, grasping, rolling and crawling towards exciting objects supports both fine and gross motor skills.
✨ Support personal, social and emotional development – A calm, cosy sensory space helps babies feel secure, regulate their emotions and build confidence to explore independently.

Our bubble tube encourages visual tracking and focus, the gentle lighting promotes calmness and wellbeing, and the variety of materials invites babies to investigate using all of their senses. 💡🫧

This is more than just a beautiful corner — it’s a space where little minds grow, confidence blossoms, and curiosity leads the way. 🌱

🎨✨ Colour Mixing Potion Station ✨🎨

This week our preschool children have been busy at our magical Colour Mixing Potion Station! The children explored a variety of coloured liquids using pipettes, squeezy bottles and containers, carefully adding them to shimmering white glitter water to see what would happen.

There were lots of “wows!” as colours changed before their eyes. The children experimented with adding drops slowly, squeezing quickly, and mixing different combinations together to create brand new shades. Some even described their creations as “magic potions” and “rainbow juice”! 🧪🌈

This hands-on experience links closely to Development Matters:

🔵 Understanding the World – exploring cause and effect as they observed how colours change and combine.
🟡 Expressive Arts and Design – experimenting creatively, developing their own ideas and using imagination in their play.
🟢 Communication and Language – introducing new vocabulary such as mix, lighter, darker, shade, combine and change, while encouraging children to explain what they noticed.
🟣 Physical Development – strengthening fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through squeezing pipettes and controlling the flow of liquid.
🔴 Mathematics – counting drops, comparing quantities and noticing differences in colour intensity.

The activity encouraged curiosity, prediction and problem-solving as the children tested their ideas and adjusted their mixtures. It was a wonderful opportunity for open-ended exploration, collaboration and scientific thinking in a fun and engaging way.

🐛🌱 Toddlers have been very busy this week! 🌱🐛

This week our toddlers have been exploring our core story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children have loved retelling the story together, using props and pictures to help bring it to life.

The toddlers searched carefully through the tray to find the different fruits from the story and excitedly fed them into the caterpillar’s mouth. This supported their listening and attention skills as they followed the sequence of the story, as well as developing early literacy skills through repetition and familiar phrases. We heard lots of counting, naming of fruits, and even some wonderful story language being used! 🐛🍎🍐🍓

In our tuff tray vegetable patch, the children used scoops and tools to dig through the oats, discovering and “harvesting” fruits and vegetables before planting them into pots. This activity supported:

🌿 Physical Development – strengthening hand and arm muscles through scooping, pouring and digging.
🌿 Communication and Language – naming fruits and vegetables, describing textures, and engaging in back-and-forth conversations.
🌿 Understanding the World – exploring where food comes from and learning about planting and growing.
🌿 Mathematics – counting items, comparing sizes and talking about more and less.

In line with Development Matters, the children were encouraged to join in with repeated refrains, develop their pretend play skills, and build confidence in expressing their ideas. The sensory textures of oats, wooden resources and soft fabrics also provided rich exploratory play opportunities.

It has been a wonderful week full of storytelling, imagination and hands-on learning — we can’t wait to see how our little caterpillars continue to grow! 🦋💚

🦕🌋 Dinosaur Swamp Land Adventure! 🌿🥚

This week our babies explored a wonderful Dinosaur Swamp Land sensory experience filled with exciting textures and natural resources.

We created:

🔴 A red “volcano” area
🪵 Piled sticks for climbing and exploring
🏜️ Sand and crushed Weetabix to make a rocky terrain
🌿 A green leafy swamp
🪺 A soft feather nest protecting a brand new dinosaur egg

Our intent was for the babies to use babble in their play and begin to use single words. The adults carefully modelled and enriched spoken language throughout the activity, repeating and extending sounds and words such as “roar,” “egg,” “hot,” “dino,” and “wow!”

As the babies explored the different textures, we narrated their actions — “The dinosaur is climbing,” “The egg is in the nest,” “Splash in the swamp!” — supporting early communication and encouraging turn-taking in conversations.

It was lovely to hear the babies experimenting with sounds, copying words and confidently vocalising as they played. Through sensory and imaginative play, we are building strong foundations for communication and language development. 🦖✨

🎄 Day 22 of Elfy & Tinsel’s Adventures 🎄

It’s almost Christmas time, and Elfy and Tinsel have been very busy! 🚜✨
This morning, the children discovered the elves had set up a construction site in the nursery — complete with diggers, sand, and some important plans…

📝 “Would you like to help us make Santa’s workshop?” 🎅🛠️

Elfy and Tinsel are practising their digging and building skills so they’re ready to help create Santa’s new workshop at the North Pole, where all the Christmas magic happens. The children were very excited and can’t wait to help with the building!

We wonder what Elfy and Tinsel will get up to next as Christmas gets closer… stay tuned! 🎄✨

🎄 Day 18 of Elfy & Tinsel’s Adventures 🎄

Uh oh… it looks like the reindeer may have paid us a visit last night! 🦌💩
We arrived this morning to find reindeer poo scattered around the nursery, and the children were not impressed! We don't think the elves we're either!

“I can’t breathe… it’s too stinky!” 🤢
“I don’t want to go there, there’s reindeer poo!” 😲
And the big question of the day… who will clean it up?! 😆

The children found this discovery absolutely hilarious and loved spotting the mess left behind by Santa’s reindeer. Don’t worry — the nursery is now clean and fresh again, ready for another day of festive fun! ✨

🎄 Day 17 of Elfy & Tinsel’s Adventures 🎄

Oh no… it looks like Elfy and Tinsel got a little too adventurous last night! 😲✨
The cheeky elves decided to go sky diving through the nursery, but things didn’t go quite to plan and they accidentally knocked down some of our Christmas decorations on their way through! 🎅🪂🎄

The children loved discovering the elves’ daring adventure this morning and were full of giggles as they helped spot what had been disturbed. Thankfully, all is well and the festive cheer is still shining bright! 🤍✨

We wonder what daring antics Elfy and Tinsel will get up to next… stay tuned for Day 18! 🎄

🎄 Day 16 of Elfy & Tinsel’s Adventures 🎄

What a magical surprise to come into nursery this morning! ✨
Elfy and Tinsel have been very busy – they popped all the way back to the North Pole last night and returned with special gifts from Santa for all of our wonderful children 🎁❄️

The elves are now resting after their long journey, surrounded by snow and presents, ready for the big celebrations ahead.

🎅 These gifts will be given out to parents at our Christmas Party this Thursday, so please make sure you don’t miss it!

We can’t wait to share the festive fun with you all 🤍🎄

🎄 Elfy & Tinsel’s Day 15 Adventure! 🎄

What a magical surprise we found this morning! Elfy and Tinsel had been busy overnight creating their very own snowy wonderland ❄️
They made snowmen using lots of “snow”, added colourful buttons and scarves, and even left a special letter for the children explaining they had brought some snow all the way from the North Pole ⛄✨

The children loved discovering the snow scene and reading the message from Elfy and Tinsel. It led to lots of excitement, imagination and festive chatter this morning! 🎅❤️

We wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring… 🎄
