The Secret History of Somerset House
2024
Hand-tinted line print on 300gsm Saunders Waterford HP paper
Signed and editioned by the artist
Edition of 50
76 x 112cm

‘Entering the courtyard of Somerset House is an exercise in time travel. Apart from the TV arial and stray paper coffee cup, the modern world melts away in the confines of this former Royal Palace, Naval Office and inland revenue HQ. This new limited edition print is titled ‘The Secret History of Somerset House’, and provides a novel vision of one of Londoners’ favourite ‘contemplative spaces’, weaving together images of architectural splendour with glimpses of arcane history and contemporary quotidian public life, exposition and endeavour.’ - Adam Dant

Launched at the RA Summer Exhibition, ‘Turner’s London’ celebrates J.M.W Turner’s 250th birthday, detailing all of the significant spots around the City of London that impacted Turner’s life and career.
“The idea of my map is to take you on a stroll through Turner’s London, to remind you that Britain’s greatest artist is still with us in spirit, in the streets of Covent Garden, and in Harley Street, and in Chelsea.“ - Adam Dant

Chalk paths or ‘Chalk Lines’ are the pivot for Sara Lee’s vision, from here she reaches out to the horizon line. This horizon is an ever changing vista connected by something deeper than her visual reference: by time, droving sheep, by human activity, by day and night and the lumen of their transition in rain, wind, sun.
EILEEN COOPER RA: LYRICAL
1-30 May
Opening: Thursday 30 April, 6-8pm
Thursday - Saturday 11am-5.30pm, Sundays 11-3pm
Oliver Projects Gallery, 51 Grove Vale, London, SE22 8EQ

Lyrical will feature 14 previously unseen ink, pastel and watercolour drawings made in response to a group of poems written by critically acclaimed writer Denise Riley. The show will explore womanhood, empathy, love, dreams, and the unexpected – themes running throughout both Eileen’s and Denise’s work.

Over many years, Sara Lee developed mokuhanga - a traditional water based method of hand printed Japanese printmaking into a unique style of imagery that is distinctly recognisable as her own. The cut wooden blocks often trace the skyline and are inked and printed in the traditional Japanese way. The ever changing climatic rendering of the sky, cloud patterns and the luminosity of dawn and dusk are achieved by applying the watercolour and medium (ink) to brushes pulling it across the surface of the woodblock in a more painterly way. In printing this layering reveals depth and distance, with a subtle undercurrent of nature from the wood-grained surface
