Why Fresh Air Helps Bedtime

Parents often notice that children settle more easily after time outdoors. This isn’t coincidence — it’s biology.

Exposure to natural daylight helps regulate children’s circadian rhythms — the body’s internal “sleep clock.” According to the NHS, accessing daylight supports healthier sleep patterns at night. Physical activity outdoors also reduces stress hormones and uses up energy in a way that promotes restorative sleep.

At Hanbury:
We follow the EYFS framework which requires that “providers must provide access to an outdoor play area … and plan and take outdoor activities daily” (EYFS Statutory Framework, 2024). Our children spend time outdoors every day, which practitioners observe makes them calmer and more settled.

At Home :
Try a short outdoor activity after tea. A walk, cycle or scooter ride, spotting the moon or first star, or looking at the evening sky can help prepare your child’s body and mind for sleep

Hanbury Kindergarten is still here and is preparing for the new academic year.
