What a day we had at our Teddy Bears’ Picnic!

We welcomed our new Reception class starters. We hope they enjoyed their session, we certainly did. This is one of our favourite times of the year, meeting new faces and getting to know you all.

There were lots of fun activities to enjoy, including colouring, threading, playing in our home corner and, of course, enjoying our special Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

As well as being lots of fun, our Teddy Bears’ Picnic is a wonderful way to help our new starters feel comfortable and confident in their new surroundings, easing those all-important ‘first day nerves’ and helping them settle into their new school routine.

We hope our Reception starters left feeling excited about starting school on Thursday and all the fun, learning and adventures that the year ahead will bring!

We can’t wait to see you all again soon.

We hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer break. We’re so excited to welcome everyone back on Wednesday for a brand-new school year, full of new friendships, learning, and opportunities to grow together.

Our school values of being Ready, Respectful and Responsible will continue to be at the heart of everything we do. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be reminding the children of these expectations as we settle back into the routines of school life.

Don’t forget to order your lunches on Arbor and any wraparound care you need through Premier Education’s booking site. Look out for emails on PE days and after-school clubs.

Here’s to another fantastic year ahead at GBA.

We’re excited to share that our new 3-week rolling lunch menu will launch at the start of the Autumn Term.

Please remember to make your child’s lunch choices on Arbor by 8.30am on the day at the very latest. We recommend booking meals a few days in advance, so you don’t forget.

When we return in August, we’ll be starting with Week 3 of the menu.

Allergy-free menu options will be available nearer the time.

On our last day of term, we are delighted to celebrate our latest group of Headteacher Award recipients.

These special awards recognise pupils who consistently demonstrate our school expectations of being Ready, Respectful and Responsible. They celebrate children who are fully engaged in their learning, show a positive attitude and act as wonderful role models for others.

A huge well done to all the children who received their Headteacher Award this term, presented during our Flourish Collective Worship. We are incredibly proud of you and the fantastic example you set every day.

Do you have a child due to start school in Autumn 2027 and interested in finding out a bit more about our school? We warmly invite you to one of our open days here at Great Bowden Academy.

Our open event is the perfect opportunity for you to see our school in action, meet our staff and get a better understanding of how the transition from pre-school to primary school works. We will have a welcome from our Head, a Q&A session, a tour of the school, refreshments and play activities set up for your child - so please do bring them along if you are able.

There was lots of creativity on display in Classes 1 and 2 during the final week of term as the children completed their Design and Technology project: making hand puppets.

The project began by designing their puppets, with each child choosing their favourite animal before bringing their ideas to life. They then developed their cutting, sewing and gluing skills, carefully selecting fabrics and materials to create their unique puppets.

The finished creations were absolutely fantastic. From colourful creatures to cuddly characters, every puppet showcased the children's imagination, creativity and growing design skills.

We're sure you'll agree they've done an amazing job.

One of the highlights of the summer term was the Harborough Carnival.

The carnival theme this year was '6', and we couldn’t help link this to our new school vision of 'A Well-Watered Garden'. Our float was transformed into a vibrant garden bursting with colourful flowers and six-legged insects, with the children dressing as either insects or flowers as well to bring our garden to life.

The float was amazing, and we weren’t the only ones to think so, we were selected as second prize winners by the Harborough Carnival judging panel.

But what you don’t often see is how much time, planning and effort it takes creating these incredible experiences. Here’s a quick ‘behind the scenes’ look at some of the work that went into making our carnival float a success, and an amazing experience for the children involved.

A huge thank you to all the students, parents and staff who helped. And a special thank you to our PTA Chair, Caroline, for having a plan and turning it into reality!

It’s another wonderful example of the fantastic community spirit, enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork we have here at GBA.

One of our fantastic Year 6 Eco Ambassadors recently took the lead in delivering a brilliant presentation to our Key Stage 1 children about one of Britain's best-loved mammals, the humble hedgehog.

Passionate about protecting wildlife, she shared how hedgehog numbers have sadly declined in recent years due to changes in our environment and modern living. She explained the challenges they face and, most importantly, the simple things we can all do to help them survive and thrive, from creating wildlife-friendly gardens to adding ‘hedgehog highways’ into fences, leaving space for them to roam.

It was a thoroughly engaging presentation that kept our younger pupils captivated throughout. The session ended with lots of thoughtful questions, showing just how much the children had learnt and how inspired they were to help our prickly friends.
We were incredibly proud to see our Eco Ambassador take such initiative, demonstrating outstanding leadership by sharing her knowledge with confidence, enthusiasm and maturity. She is a wonderful role model for our younger pupils and a fantastic advocate for caring for our natural world.

Well done, you did an amazing job.

Have you joined the library’s summer reading Challenge yet? It’s a fantastic challenge and it’s free to take part.

This year's Summer Reading Challenge, ‘Read to the Beat’, invites children across Leicestershire to explore the creative power of storytelling and music. Aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years, challenges them to read six or more library books over the summer. Throughout the challenge children can collect a poster, stickers, and a medal at the end.

We love this scheme. Children who take part are shown to be more enthusiastic about reading, maintain their reading level over the holidays, return to schools keen and ready to learn and it gives them a boost their confidence and self-esteem.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome many of our wonderful volunteers to school for tea and cake as a small token of our appreciation.

From our ‘Open the Book’ team and PTA members, to our reading volunteers, Forest School helpers and everyone else who generously gives their time to support our school, we want to say a heartfelt thank you.

Your commitment, enthusiasm and kindness make such a difference to the experiences we are able to offer our children. Whether you're helping behind the scenes, supporting learning, organising events or sharing your skills and time, you play a valued role in our school community.

Great Bowden Academy is incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers, and we are grateful for everything you do to help our children thrive.

Thank you for being part of our school family.
