If you are a parent of a kid learning the drums consider this. To learn the drums at this stage of life its likely you may not have listened to a lot of music. Intentionally I mean. Being a blank sheet, its really good to better understand what the drumming world is all about. If you are isolated from music and drummers, this will be difficult. Consider the following;

Start listening to music. Consider classics. Theres a wealth of music to access easily through a streaming app, your parents or siblings music collection or you tube.

Watch drumming videos. Try drumeo, videos from drum and cymbal makers like Meinl

Go and see live music. Many family friendly live music events throughout the year

Visit music shops (Horncastle has a dedicated drum shop)

Visit the UK drum show. Make a weekend of it!!!

And of course practise practise practise.

Can you become a well rounded or even technical drummer from just playing rock covers. It is possible if you play enougn (and I mean a lot) but I'm a firm believer you need to develop your skills along side. Also playing one style of music doesn't test you in the same way other styles might.

Although its great to have confidence in what you do, when you are starting out remember the old saying you need to walk before you can run. Be careful with assumptions. Firstly do your research. Check out other drummers. Remember to keep building that foundation work. If you don't spend the time on that it will come back to bite you and become very frustrating. Along with our guidance, repetition is everything. Don't expect results without it. Also be honest with yourself In terms of strengths and definitely weaknesses.
