Four generations of UoM graduates 🥹

Today is a very special day for Computer Science graduate Olivia, as she becomes the fifth person in her family to graduate from Manchester:

• Great grandfather Leyland V. Gaulter – BSc Mathematics & Chemistry, 1930 (not pictured)
• Grandfather Richard J. Topliss – BScTech, MScTech Elect Eng, 1959, 1960
• Auntie Margaret E. Topliss – BSc Mathematics, 1990
• Father Stephen M. Topliss – MSc Physics with French, 1997
• Olivia Girardot - Computer Science, 2026

Olivia's granddad Richard recently reached out to us to reflect on his time at Manchester...

"I first arrived in Manchester by steam train pulling in to Central Station. I had digs in Withington and cycled to college. If the weather was bad I would take the 41, 42 or 43 bus. Amazing to see the same numbered bus routes today!

I started my degree course in October 1956. Soon afterwards the Suez crisis erupted and I remember student protest marches along Oxford Road, under the railway bridge into town. This was soon followed by petrol rationing. One of my friends had a car – a real old banger that had cost him about £20. He was able to sell it for a profit because of the petrol coupons that went with it!

The traditional Rag Day procession of floats became a problem because of the fuel shortage. Sure enough some enterprising students found a solution. They managed to locate enough serviceable steam driven traction engines from a previous era to drive the procession as usual. It was a fantastic scene from the university and up Oxford Road, never seen before or since."

Congratulations to Graeme Thomas (Biomedical Sciences), a recent inductee into our UoM Sport Hall of Fame.

Olympic rower Graeme Thomas enjoys overdue graduation Olympic rower and Manchester alumnus, Graeme Thomas, was finally able to take part in his graduation ceremony this week, 14 years after Team GB came calling.Graeme studied Biomedical Sciences with Manchester, and it was while here that he took up rowing.
