Hello everyone,
Hope you’re all well.
Have you ever wondered about why some people think punctuation is so important?
Consider this example, and you can see why.
What does the term 'hedging' language mean?
This is a key part of academic writing and helps to maintain your neutrality. It's important to be balanced in academic writing, as this is how most academics write.
Here is an example to consider:
I say that this position is incorrect.
CHANGE TO:
The evidence seems to indicate that this position may be problematic.
OR
The data suggests this position could be flawed.
Look at the words used for/to support hedging in these sentences:
SEEMS
INDICATE
MAY
SUGGESTS
COULD
Other examples of words that could be used for hedging language to soften your writing are:
infer
intimates
could
possible
probable
likely
perhaps
it could be argued
it is generally agreed
there is a broad consensus
assume
conceivable
There are many more examples out there. Hopefully this gives you a greater understanding of how and when to use hedging in your writing.

The 3 parts/stages of writing
What does this involve?
It's quite simple, really. Most, if not all forms of written communication consist of:
1. Beginning
2. Middle
3. End
Whether it's an SMS to your friend or family, or a literary masterpiece (book, dissertation, article, etc.) chances are you already have or will employ this structure in your writing.
The beginning could be a sentence that intrigues the reader or makes a bold claim or statement. It gives a reason for wanting to read on, or it could provide the basis or foundation for what is to follow. If this is well-written, it can set up the rest of the text making things easier.
The middle usually involves the real 'nitty gritty'; the details, the facts, information, etc. If you're writing an academic piece, then the expectation or onus falls on the writer to substantiate claims and statements from existing literature. If your job is to persuade and cajole others or argue a point, then writing has to be convincing without being overly-bold, brash or cocky. It may be better not to say something if you can't back it up as you may lose credibility.
The end usually brings everything together in a nice and succinct summary. You could be making a call to action, a recommendation, or you might just re-iterate what needs to be done for the benefit of the recipient.
If you follow this simple approach in your writing and think BEFORE you write, not whilst you're writing, you should be okay.
