In Japanese (specifically Okinawan, where tonfa kata originates) martial arts, footwork generally involves moving on the balls of the feet, often with a sliding motion (known as suriashi or tsugi-ashi), rather than lifting them completely or pivoting heavily on the heels. The specific technique, however, depends on the movement and style.
Footwork in Tonfa Kata
Sliding (Suriashi/Tsugi-ashi): The feet often "glide" just above or along the ground to maintain a low center of gravity and stability, making it harder for an opponent to unbalance or sweep the practitioner. This method helps ensure continuous connection to the ground for power generation and quick adjustments.
In Japanese, jujutsu (柔術) most commonly translates to "gentle art".
The term is composed of two kanji characters:
Jū (柔): Means "gentle," "soft," "flexible," "supple," or "yielding". In a martial context, it refers to the principle of yielding to an opponent’s force rather than meeting it with direct resistance.
Jutsu (術): Means "art," "technique," "skill," or "science".
