Abraham Moss Community School

In our art lessons, Year 4 have been learning about the ancient Mayan civilisation. We discovered where the Mayans lived and explored the reasons why they wore masks. Inspired by our learning, we designed and created our own colourful Mayan masks using a range of artistic techniques. We are very proud of our finished masks and enjoyed learning about this fascinating part of history while developing our creative skills.

Some of our Year 5 pupils recently enjoyed an exciting trip to London. During the visit, they explored several famous landmarks, including the British Library, British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Horse Guards Parade and Westminster Abbey.
The children also admired the beautiful St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and enjoyed lunch in Russell Square. It was a fantastic day filled with learning, exploration and memorable experiences for all involved.

Year 5 welcomed Shaun Morris who is a Elections and Electoral Registration Policy & Engagement Officer to school for an engaging visit about democracy and elections. Shaun explained the voting process and how elections work, helping pupils understand the importance of having their voices heard. The children then took part in their own voting activity and created their own manifestos, sharing ideas and promises they would make if they were elected. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that encouraged teamwork, confidence and an understanding of British values.

On Thursday, eight children between years 4, 5 and 6 travelled across Manchester to Wright Robinson College to play netball against other schools from the whole of Manchester. Our team was in good spirits and that feeling of self-belief was enhanced further when in the first game, we won 1-0. The second match unfortunately led to a defeat. The final match was end-to-end, with both teams having great opportunities to score. Sadly, we narrowly lost the final match. This was Abraham Moss's first netball tournament and was a wonderful experience for all our players. We are very proud of each of them.

Bikeability sessions have continued this week for our Year 5 pupils, and it has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and progress. The children have been fully engaged in developing their cycling skills, building confidence, and learning how to ride safely on the road. Throughout the sessions, pupils have demonstrated excellent focus and determination, supporting one another as they practise key techniques. It has been wonderful to watch their confidence grow with each lesson, and we are proud of the positive attitude they have shown towards learning this important life skill.

In Reception, we have been learning about life cycles, and this week we have been focusing on the life cycle of a butterfly. The children have been fascinated to discover how a tiny egg grows into a caterpillar, then forms a chrysalis before finally becoming a beautiful butterfly. To support our learning, we now have real caterpillars in the classroom! The children are very excited and have been carefully observing them each day as they grow and change. We have been talking about what the caterpillars need to survive and making predictions about how they will look as they develop.
We are all looking forward to watching the amazing transformation take place and seeing the butterflies emerge over the coming weeks.

Year 4 enjoyed a very exciting visit from Greater Manchester Police. The officers spoke to the children about the importance of staying safe online and shared helpful advice about how to use the internet responsibly. The children listened carefully and asked lots of thoughtful questions about online safety, including how to stay safe when gaming, chatting online, and using apps and websites. One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for the children to explore the police van. Everyone was excited to look inside and learn more about the important work the police do to help keep our community safe. We would like to thank the officers from Greater Manchester Police for taking the time to visit our school and provide such an informative and enjoyable experience for Year 4.

Some pupils played in their first ever Cricket tournament for Abraham Moss. They hit some brilliant shots, took some great wickets and fielded really well. They had a lot of fun and they will have learnt a lot on how to improve their batting, bowling and fielding skills. Overall, it was a great evenings cricket.

Last term, we were proud to celebrate our Value Champions—students who consistently demonstrated our school’s core values in their everyday actions. To recognise their efforts, these pupils were invited to a special pizza celebration, where they enjoyed some well-deserved time together. The event was a fantastic opportunity to highlight their positive contributions to our school community. From showing kindness and respect to demonstrating resilience and responsibility, each Value Champion has set a wonderful example for others to follow. It was lovely to see the students relaxing, chatting, and enjoying their reward. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing more pupils strive to become Value Champions in the future!

Reception pupils enjoyed an exciting and memorable experience, when they took part in a fascinating Creepy Crawly Roadshow. As part of their current topic, the children had the opportunity to see a variety of mini beasts and small creatures up close. From wriggling insects to intriguing tiny animals, the session sparked great curiosity and enthusiasm among the pupils. This hands-on experience allowed the children to learn more about the natural world in an engaging and interactive way. They were encouraged to observe carefully, ask questions, and even hold some of the creatures, helping to build their confidence as well as their understanding of living things.
The Roadshow was a wonderful way to bring learning to life, and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed this unique opportunity to explore and discover.
