We were delighted to welcome Lady Unchained and Sandhya Sharma at the Sylvia Pankhurst Network Annual Lecture. Together, they discussed and explored intersectional feminism as a practice of resistance, community power and transformative justice.

Lady Unchained is the founder of Unchained Poetry ((https://www.unchained.org.uk/), an artistic platform for those making their way through the criminal justice system, using creativity and storytelling as tools for liberation and change. We listened intently as she read an extract from her debut book 'Behind Bars on Punishment, Prison and Release'. Sandhya Sharma is an anti-racism feminist activist with over 30 years' experience in grassroots struggles to end violence against women and girls. She also co-founded Safety4Sisters North West (https://www.safety4sisters.org/).

Thank you to both speakers for such powerful, inspiring contributions, and to everyone who joined us.

The Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Network is an interdisciplinary network for critically engaged feminist research, situated within Manchester Law School. The annual lecture celebrates gender and diversity beyond academia.

Over 50 of our current undergraduate and postgraduate students recently attended a Judicial Marshalling Programme networking evening at Manchester Civil Justice Centre – a highly successful and inspirational event for students aspiring to careers in the legal profession.

Throughout the evening, our students were able to connect with judges, barristers, solicitors, pupils, legal advisers and other legal professionals, creating valuable opportunities for conversation and mentorship. This led to:

⭐ Insightful perspectives on the diverse career journeys that exist within the legal sector

⭐ Demystifying the profession by showcasing multiple pathways into courts, chambers and firms

⭐ Practical guidance on best practices and common pitfalls

Here’s what some of our students had to say:

🗣️“I have gained confidence in my future career path and developed clarity in what I need to do to achieve in my career”

🗣️“As a student without any connections with lawyers, I found this event extremely helpful to gain a deeper understanding of the law and a career in it. Thank you for the opportunity to talk to professionals as it eased some anxieties I had regarding my future”

🗣️“Guidance on how to navigate the process of applications, how to build up my CV in a way that helps it to stand out and where to look for more opportunities”

Many thanks to the event organiser. We are grateful for the remarkable work she has done to create multiple marshalling opportunities for the 161 students who applied to the Judicial Marshalling Programme in 2025/26.
