Spotted our bird and bat boxes on campus? 🔍🪶🪺

The new boxes are made of wood stone, which makes them more durable and are guaranteed at least 10 years of life. Work also included moving some pre-existing boxes to locations more likely to support the animals, for example, bat boxes were moved from a noisy junction to increase the likelihood of nesting 🦇💚.
This all helps to support our Valuing Nature action plan to increase habitat enhancements (bird/ bat and bug hotels) by 20% by 2028!

We are now a bronze accredited Hedgehog Friendly Campus🥉🦔🌳

Since September of last year, our network of dedicated staff and student volunteers’ part of the Hedgehog Friendly Action Group have been working hard to make our campus friendlier for wildlife.

The European Hedgehog has been in decline since the 1990’s. Under threat by rapid urbanization, our spikey friends need our help now more than ever. This is why The University of Manchester opted in to the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Challenge – joining other Universities and Schools across the UK to protect this important bio-indicator species. The HFC programme aligns closely with our University’s Valuing Nature Action Plan – recognizing the importance of campuses as spaces for nature recovery and biodiversity 🪲🪻🐾

From litter-picks to house building, this year has been action packed — and there’s plenty more to come. We are so looking forward to building on our success and getting that silver accreditation next year!

Outside of members in our action group, over 230 staff and students engaged with our HFC Campaign this year 🩷 Interested in joining our action group? Become a student champion in the 2026/27 Academic Year, or contact [email protected]

It's Hedgehog Awareness Week! (3rd - 9th May)

As a Hedgehog Friendly University, we're organising two weeks worth of activities and sharing information about our prickly neighbours. We hope to help our staff and students better understand the risks they face, from litter to bonfires, and appreciate them just a little bit more.

We're also running a raffle to fundraise for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society who are dedicated to protecting them. Take part next Wednesday for a chance to win some great prizes!

Hopefully you'll see one when you're next out in the evening- Keep both an eye and ear out 🦔
