Did you know this building on Oxford Road - once the site of the Regal Cinema, now The Dancehouse Theatre - was where Alan Turing met Arnold Murray in December 1951?

After this chance meeting, a series of unfortunate events led to Turing being criminally charged with ‘gross indecency’ on part of his homosexuality. He would later pass away from cyanide poisoning (the circumstances of which are still debated today) three years later.

But let’s rewind for a minute ⏮️

In January 1952, a month after the two men met, Turing’s Wilmslow house was burgled by an acquaintance of Murray’s.

When the crime was reported to the police, the nature of their intimate relationship also came to light, and both were criminally charged. Turing underwent chemical castration as part of his probation and way of avoiding prison. This barbaric practice was an effort to reduce his libido, or rather, his attraction to men.

Now? This place on Oxford Road serves as a poignant reminder of the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ relationships; how far we’ve come as a society; and how there’s still more work to do.

The theme of Manchester Pride 2026 is ‘No place like home’ and as the city that Turing lived, worked and died in, his legacy can be found everywhere.

Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈 Let’s continue to make Manchester a welcoming, safe and joyful space for the LGBTQ+ community 💜

We asked our academics about small acts of sustainability.

Then, we asked ourselves: why not lean on universal figures of wisdom to deliver the learnings?

Take it away Michael 🙂‍↕️
