This year our school has been selected by Crown Point North Retail Park to benefit from the National Literacy Trust’s Young Readers Programme. This is made possible through generous funding from the owner of Crown Point North, British Land, as part of their commitment to support the communities around the properties they own.

Children in Reception and Year 1 have participated in three exciting reading events this year, all designed to develop reading for pleasure and to engage the children in the lifelong skill of choosing books that suit their interest and ability. At each event the children were able to choose a book of their own to take home and keep.

The final event took place yesterday and we had a fantastic time. Every child made a bookmark to use with their new book. And best of all we were treated to a visit by a poet, Louise Fazackerley. Louise performed some poems and we were able to join in. She also helped us to write a group poem. Everyone really enjoyed themselves!

Many thanks to everyone who has helped us to be part of this very beneficial project!

Toilet Roll Tubes – Examples 11/02/2022

World Book Day 2022

Wow, how time flies! We are delighted to be in school for World Book Day this year and would like to invite all children to join in with the following events:

Decorate a toilet roll tube competition:
Exactly as the name of the competition suggests, decorate a tube (or multiple tubes) as a book character/scene from a book. You can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. There are some examples on the reading blog for you to look at: http://reading.russellscottblogs.net/toilet-roll-tubes-examples/
Make sure you label your entry with your name, class and the name of the character/book scene you have created. Please send your entry to school by Tuesday 1st March so that we can judge them before World Book Day.

Dress up as a word:
On Thursday 3rd March, all children are invited to dress up for World Book Day. This year is slightly different as we would like you to dress as a word! This can be any word of your choice – you could be brave, tired, silver, glamorous... There are some examples here, but again please be as creative as you wish. http://reading.russellscottblogs.net/dress-as-a-word-examples/
We know that some children love dressing up and others aren’t so keen, some of you will have planned your costumes months ago and others will be very last minute…hopefully this open ended approach will suit every child and family. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! Please find a way of displaying your word on your costume on the day.

Facebook Live Story:
Join us live on the main school page at 4pm on Thursday 3rd March for a story which all the family will enjoy. Children must be supervised by an adult when using Facebook.

Ready Steady Read at Tameside Libraries:
https://www.tameside.gov.uk/Libraries/news7
Tameside Libraries are offering a variety of exciting events over the next two weeks as part of their Children’s Book Festival.

Thank you for helping us to build a reading community. We are looking forward to a jam packed week at school full of reading events, prizes and surprises!
Miss Zauscinski and Miss Cotton.

Nursery Opening Delayed Until 10th January 2022

May I firstly wish you a Happy New Year and hope you all were on Santa’s ‘nice’ list. Unfortunately its not the happiest of starts in school with a number of staff now isolating due to Covid related illness. This will obviously be on going across school as it is in every workplace and will be difficult to manage over these next few weeks.

Due to staff illness the date of opening for nursery children will be delayed until Monday 10th January 2022 and not open this Wednesday the 5th January 2022 as expected.

Thankfully the isolation period has now been reduced to 7 days if two negative Lateral Flow tests can be provided. this guidance will be shared on a later email.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience of it all but we are doing all we can to provide face to face teaching across school but current staff absence has hit us hard. I have though tried to give you as much time as possible to make alternative arrangements for your children. A general email will come out later today to all parents outlining the new Government guidance issued on Sunday and the changes that will take place.

My apologies for the delay in opening nursery but we have no other practical and safe option.

Take care and stay safe

Virtual Assembly - Y6 Leavers 2021 - Russell Scott Primary School 12/09/2021

Good Morning!

I'm sure you will have seen various media reports this week and our MP Andrew Gwynne on the TV news asking a question of Gavin Williamson the Secretary of State for Education about our school in Parliament.

Please be assured that the reports and various issues with the school are historical and do not currently affect your children. Just look back on the year we have had! http://rusurl.com/va2021

You know that your children are happy and safe in school and receiving the very best educational experiences that we are can from 1:1 iPads to GM school of the year and leading advocates for action on environmental issues Russell Scott are always at the forefront. We have a fantastic group of people at Russell Scott Primary School who work tirelessly to make sure Russell Scott is the best it can be with your children's best interests at heart. Alongside our senior team and I ....we have the broad shoulders and the experience to guide the school through to the bright future and the fabulous outcome we all deserve.

We do though need your support and strength to do it and your parent representatives on the Governing Body are doing a great job and are there for you to engage with. I am on the playgrounds morning and afternoon and always available for you. Managing the school through the Covid pandemic is hard enough without the added problems associated with the building. Our school community is strong and resilient who deserve the very best so by working together rest assured all will be well!

Our year 6 who have just left were the last group of children who went through some of the very difficult times that have been sensationalised in the press that have occurred over the past 6 years. They never got the chance to run around on the sports field or enjoy the facilities that had been promised but we have to keep moving forward and use those experiences to drive us on. This was due to the very poor construction and management by Carillion and the lies they told to everyone denying the seriousness of what they had done that unraveled when the company collapsed.

Since the collapse of Carillion the Council have spent 10s of 1000s of pounds on making sure the school can safely operate. In fact if the media hadn't brought this into focus you would never know, (apart from the school field) just by looking at school that we had endured such difficulties over the years. Last summer the Council spent nearly £300, 000 on works around the school to alleviate the difficulties and a further £200,000 making the school fields safe from the rubble and building site waste that Carillion had dumped on the field and hid under the soil. Our parents led by Zoe Lehmann, big shout out Zoe.....petitioned Carillion and the Council to get the sports fields reinstated that started a detailed investigation by architects into the wider problems that we were managing.

Those extensive reports have now led to our MP and past pupil of Russell Scott, Andrew Gwynne along with The Executive Leader of the Council and Denton Councillor Brenda Warrington, who are lobbying Government about what they plan to do about our plight. I would like to take the opportunity to thank both Brenda and Andrew who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to rectify the disgraceful problems left behind by Carillion and provide a school fit for the 21st Century. The outcome is that short term fixes don't work and a more long term solution is being discussed at the highest level to secure Russell Scott for the future! As soon as I hear anymore I will share it with you.

Enjoy the rest of the day,

Steve Marsland

In memory of Adrian Read 19/05/2021

I know that a lot of parents and friends of the school have an association with Two Trees High School and know Mr Adrian Read who was a music teacher and band leader for over 30 years.
It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Adrian Read a great friend of our school and the wider community of Two Trees High School and our towns of Denton and Haughton Green. His funeral is on Thursday and because of Covid rules on attendance at funerals it can be viewed and shared via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88478939619 Meeting ID: 884 7893 9619 Passcode: 1234
Date: 9.40-11.15am 20.May.2021
Adrian better known as Ade was an inspirational music teacher at Two Trees High School who changed lives through his music. He also played at our own school at Russell Scott, offered music lessons to the children and practiced with his band playing many concerts for charity. How poignant, that as the old Two Trees building is demolished one of its greatest, most inspiring and dedicated teachers also passes away but leaves a fabulous legacy behind. Great schools are made great by the people in them and Adrian Read was one of the greatest, most recognisable, and talented teachers that ever served the school community.
I owe him a particular debt of gratitude as it was he who inspired me to teach, reflecting a passion in developing the skills of children and doing things his own inimitable way with enormous drive and a passion in everything he did. We actually have 4 members of staff in school, including me, who were taught music by him and played in his renowned Big Bands! He was out on his own, a maverick of an individual where music was concerned. His was a life and career that can never be replicated but who we need to thank for the lifetime he dedicated to inspiring children through his great skills as a teacher and musician. Who could have imagined that generations of Denton children would be introduced to swing and the music of big bands to become Young Musicians of The Year and still leading a Big Band into his 80's! I shall miss him…. as many whose lives have been touched by him will miss him. It has been an honour and a privilege to be in his company and to introduce his talents and his music to more generations of children at at Russell Scott. His memory shall live on through his love of music, particularly jazz, that he instilled in everyone with a generosity of spirit that kept him playing right to the end.
God Bless you Ade….and thank you from us all.
Adrian raised thousands of pounds for charity particularly Dr Kershaw's hospice. What better way to say thank you to Ade than to donate to his favourite charity?!! Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to Dr Kershaw's Hospice, so it's the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
