Dalcroze UK

Dalcroze UK The freedom and joy of music through movement - for teachers, musicians, and performers.

There are three branches of Dalcroze Eurhythmics

Rhythmics:
Understanding all the elements of the language of music by experiencing them through the body and learning about the basic principles relating to them. Ear-training (Kodály in the UK):
Developing skills and knowledge about pitch, intervals, scales, harmony and tonality leading to full comprehension of the building blocks of music and a

n ability to use these for improvisation. Improvisation (vocal, instrumental and in movement):
Developing the ability to express musical concepts, feelings and form through spontaneous creation; being able to initiate movement through sound. Together these three aspects lead to an integrated and expressive understanding of the language of music.

🎵 When did music stop surprising you?

Experience music before you analyse it.

Most musicians don't fall out of love with music. Life gets busy. Lessons to prepare. Concerts to rehearse. Exams to mark. Practice becomes routine. Teaching becomes familiar. Somewhere along the way, it's easy to forget the feeling that first made you want to become a musician.🎼

The Dalcroze approach offers something wonderfully different.
It invites you to step away from simply analysing music... and experience it again through movement, listening, creativity and play.🧡

Many of our students arrive hoping to improve their teaching. What they often discover is something much more personal. A renewed confidence. Fresh creativity. A deeper connection with music itself.

Sometimes the most important thing we learn isn't something new. It's remembering what inspired us in the first place.

📚✨ New Publication on the Dalcroze Method ✨📚

We are delighted to share news of a new book by internationally respected Dalcroze teacher Toru Sakai:

🎶 The Dalcroze Method: An Analysis of the Method and What I Have Learned from My Experience

Drawing on more than 40 years of teaching and leadership within Dalcroze education, the book offers a thoughtful exploration of the Dalcroze Method for both experienced practitioners and those training to teach.

Toru Sakai is recognised worldwide as a leading figure in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. A graduate of the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva and member of the Dalcroze Collège (Supreme Council), he has played a foundational role in developing Dalcroze education in Japan and internationally. 🌍

His work focuses on translating musical understanding — rhythm, pulse, and subdivision — into embodied physical experience through movement.

DUK believe this will be a valuable resource for teachers and students of Dalcroze in the UK and beyond. 💛

📖 Published by Kawai Publishing, the book can be purchased directly through their website - Link in the first comment 👇

🎻✨ Join us for our next Zoom Café ☕💻 with the brilliant Monica Wilkinson!

🎶 Topic: Using Dalcroze to Develop String Ensemble Skills with 7–10 Year Olds

When Monica set up the youngest orchestra in the National Youth String Orchestra, she took a bold approach—ditching sheet music and putting the body at the centre of music-making. In this lively session, she’ll share how Dalcroze and Kodály-inspired techniques help young musicians build strong skills through movement, listening, and embodied learning.

✨ You’ll discover how:
🎵 Pulse, rhythm & phrasing come alive through movement
🎻 Ensemble skills can be developed away from instruments
💡 Physical awareness supports healthy, confident playing
🌱 A thriving orchestra grew using these creative methods

👤 About Monica: A specialist in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Monica is a Lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and works with the National Youth String Orchestra, directing its Sinfonietta programme. Her experience spans the UK and internationally, alongside collaborations with Playground Proms and Sistema Scotland.
