Mini eggs of all colours and brands are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

That’s why they carry a safety warning that they aren’t recommended for children under 4.

So, when you’re stocking up for the Easter Bunny please stay safe and choose another treat for your little one.

Visit our choking hub to learn more about common choking hazards and what you should do in an emergency: https://capt.org.uk/choking-prevention/

The importance of teeth brushing and when you should start.

As soon as your child has their first tooth cut through you should introduce good dental hygiene so it becomes a part of their daily routine. It is important your child has healthy teeth – they help them eat, speak and smile confidently. Milk teeth also help to align and space their adult teeth.

Some do’s and don’ts which can be found on the NHS website are:
Do:
- Use a smear (the size of a grain of rice) of toothpaste for babies and toddlers up to 3 years.
- Use a pea sized amount of toothpaste for children aged 3 to 6.
- Brush your child’s teeth in the morning and last thing at night for 2 minutes each time.
- Use a toothpaste with at least 1000 ppm (parts per million) fluoride.
- Replace your child’s toothbrush every 3 months or sooner.
- Encourage your child to spit out toothpaste and not swallow it.

Don’t:
- Do not rinse with water after brushing as it washes away fluoride.
- Do not let your child eat or lick toothpaste from the tube.

Having healthy teeth and gums also means drinking and eating the right things to, it’s not just about the amount of sugar in sweet food and drinks, it is also how often they are consumed.

Fizzy drinks, soft drinks and juice drinks can all lead to tooth decay. The best drink for your child to have is unflavoured milk or water. It is also important to not give your child juices or sugary drinks in a baby bottle. Bottles should be slowly weaned off your child from the age of 1 so by the time they reach 2 years old they are not having any bottles as this can also be bad for their teeth.
